Now, you CAN take it with you

As I suggested on the previous page, none of these trends are absolute. For example, the aforementioned One does support versus games, primarily via Bluetooth. Also, some mobile games can become quite time-intensive. In fact, what prompted me to write this article is the fact that, recently, I have twice become thoroughly addicted to mobile games. The first time was with The Sims 2-for-1 Pack, or more specifically, its Castaway component (the Pets component didn’t grab me, but anyone who has enjoyed owning a Tamagotchi is likely to be irrevocably hooked!) mobile02.gifThis game had me so engrossed that I repeatedly went to bed late, and even neglected my PC! (previously unheard of, by the way!) Until I had finished it, I quite literally could not put it down – especially since I could quite happily take a bath and carry on playing, take it with me when I went outside for a cigarette, and carry on playing in bed, then realising that it’s 4am and I am still up, if not actually about! Mobile games drain a phone’s battery something special, though, so it’s a good thing my charger is next to my bed…

The second time I have been bitten by a mobile game’s bug involves (and yes, I use the present tense here, as I have not yet been cured – though I like to think I am making progress toward recovery!) mobile04.jpgMonopoly: Here & Now: The World Edition (oh no! Mobile games are also jumping on the ridiculously long title band-wagon! Even despite their small screens…) This is an impressive implementation of Hasbro’s famous, household name of a board-game. The problem here is that not only has this game been well converted to this platform, and I can play it anywhere (if I ignore you in a conversation, for example when standing around outside the office having a smoke, I apologise in advance – know it’s likely due to Monopoly!), but it is also more re-playable than most. I start a game, I play a game, then I can start another, if I like.

Over the next year or two, as game publishers refine their understanding of the mobile gaming market, we are likely to see huge growth in the availability of game titles, as well as an improvement in their overall quality – already we are starting to see some impressive products! Will mobile gaming get to the point we are at with PCs, with people’s handset upgrades being motivated largely by the games they want to play? Time will tell. And perhaps we will see a return of mobile games to the WCG and similar events…
