Don’t expect Elder Scrolls V anytime soon…

Would you pay R200 a month to play an Oblivion-style MMO?

It’s heart-breaking, Oblivion fans, but Bethesda’s Todd Howard has gone on record to say that we shouldn’t expect Elder Scrolls V anytime soon. Speaking at QuakeCon 2009, Howard tried to sooth the anguished gamers by joking that “there’s always a chance” for an Elder Scrolls MMO. The next day, Bethesda’s holding company, Zenimax Media, started registering a whole bunch of domains like ElderScrollsOnline.com, ElderScrollsMMO.com and TheElderScrollsMMOG.net – suspicious.

Considering how just about every big publisher wouldn’t mind getting their own World of Warcraft-style cash-cow, the likelihood of Elder Scrolls V taking a back-seat for a money-making MMO is high. What do you think about it?

I think an Elder Scrolls MMO or such is a great evolution of the title, as Elder’s Scrolls opens itself up to an open world multiplayer experience (excuse the pun). But, in the scope of making it because it’s a cash cow, or because everyone else is jumping on to the online bandwagon, that isn’t a very comforting thought. Additionally Elder Scrolls always told an epic lone hero story, how that would translate to an online game is also fairly questionable.
All in all, if Bethesda can pull it off, it will be one great title.
