It seems that powerhouse developer and publisher Ubisoft plans to make a positive impact on the environment by doing away with the idea of paper manuals included with retail games for good. Apparently one or two of their games have already been released without paper manuals, and a number of their developers have announced plans to switch to 100% recycled materials for game packaging. While there is something nice about a glossy, full colour manual, I’d happily make the switch myself. I’d actually begun to wonder why they bothered including them because, since about the early middle of the last generation of games consoles, practically every game has included an interactive integrated tutorial anyway. Ubisoft also says that this will be a good opportunity to concentrate on improving the quality of in-game tutorials from now on – let’s hope that means more convenient and less intrusive instead of more so.
