For the uninitiated (read: unfortunate), Ron Gilbert is one of the original creators of the Monkey Island games. He worked on another point-and-click adventure called Maniac Mansion – you might have heard of it.

Gilbert’s last big title was DeathSpank with Hothead Games. Once that game hit the interwebs, he left Hothead for Double Fine – Tim Schafer’s development studio. Tim Schafer is, as you know, another one of the original designers of Monkey Island, as well as a metric ton of other Lucasarts adventure games.

Having both of these legends under one roof is something many adventure game fans are really excited about. They’re not necessarily working on the same game though and it might not even be an adventure game, but it’s the closest fans have ever been to those glorious adventure releases from the nineties.

The pictures were published via Gilbert’s personal blog, Grumpy Gamer. Along with the images, he had this to say:

“Here are a couple of fine pieces of concept art from the game I’m making with the amazing folks at Double Fine.  I’m so excited.  This is an idea that has been in my head for a long long long time.  It predates Maniac Mansion and Monkey Island.

It’s a game that needed to be made. These are two of the playable characters.  That’s all I can say right now, but more will follow later.”
