Mass Effect 3 is out in early March, but before it lands on retail shelves, EA is planning on blasting an unspecified number of copies off into space. Well technically, they aren’t blasting anything, they’re floating them off gently using high-altitude weather balloons.

The balloons will be released from New York, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Berlin, London and Paris, and each copy of the game will have a GPS device attached to it. The devices will then relay the locations of the games, which will be traceable via the official Mass Effect website.

You know what they say right: what comes up must come down. While that’s not strictly accurate in all cases, especially when we’re dealing with space, we can assume that at some point these massive weather balloons will slowly begin descending from the heavens, bearing crates filled with copies of Mass Effect 3, which is a nice thought.

Mass Effect is due out on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 on 9 March, 2012.
