Earth’s largest conference dedicated specifically to the individuals who work within the games development industry kicked off yesterday, yaaaaaay!

As a regular gamer, you might be wondering why you should care, and to be honest, I’m not completely sure. However, GDC 2012 this year will boast over 400 lectures, panels, tutorials, roundtable discussions and workshops by all sorts of super-smart industry folk that are responsible for bringing us countless hours of gaming fun all year round.

“The GDC has long served as a platform for innovation and exploration within our community and we are proud to say that as we head into our 26th edition of the event, we continue to uphold those principles,” said Meggan Scavio, general manager of the Game Developers Conference.

“We are on the cusp of a brand new era in digital entertainment and it has never been more crucial for the industry to come together and exchange ideas at a forum like the one GDC has provided for more than two decades,” said Scavio.

Publishers also use GDC to make announcements, the most exciting of which, for me anyways, is the expected SimCity 5 announcement which is supposed to happen at about 3 AM tomorrow morning! Watch this space for more on that.
