Game developer American McGee has persistently shown a keen interest in adapting fairytales and children’s novels and turning them into games. He’s been behind the original Alice from 2000 as well as a series of episodic Grimm fairytales games. More recently, however, he dragged us all back to Wonderland last year in Alice: Madness Returns, which was met with mixed reactions.

Now it looks like American McGee and the rest of the team at Shanghai-based Spicy Horse are turning their attention to another classic tale: Little Red Riding Hood. The twist: it’s Little Red Riding Hood set in Edo Period Japan, and it’s called Akaneiro: Demon Hunters.

The game is an action-RPG that’ll be free-to-play on PC, web browsers and tablet devices. In the game, you’ll join The Order of Akane – a professional group of demon hunters.

The game looks like your typical Diablo-styled romp, and judging by the early screenshots, the hand-painted environments are looking rather beautiful. Apparently a beta is planned for later in the year. If you want to, you can head over to the official website for access to the game’s Twitter and Facebook page.

I’m a massive fan of McGee’s Alice games, so I’m always interested to see what he’s up to. It’s quite exciting that his next project is set in Japan considering the Japanese portions of Alice: Madness Returns were some of the best in terms of artistic direction and design.
