Google launches a new Chromebook, the Acer C7

Chromebooks are very good value for those of us who need something that’s a better netbook than the original netbooks were. Using the same Intel Celeron 847 processor as found in the already-available ASUS X201E, the C7 ships with a 11″ 1366 x 768 glossy screen, 2GB of DDR3 RAM, a 320GB hard drive with 100GB of space on Google’s Drive service in a rather classy and understated all-plastic dark grey chassis. Acer’s C7 is available in the US now for $199 and you can buy one through Google’s online portal as well. So, who’s buying one? Early reports of the original Chromebook CR-48 suggested that one could hack it and load Windows instead. The Samsung Chromebook is ARM-based, but does feature a “developer” mode in the BIOS which allows you to install other OSes. Will the C7 prove more successful?

I bought the Samsung Series 5 Chromebook when it came out, entirely for work-related travel. I’m rather dissapointed with it – for the price, it’s an underperforming kit that can barely play youtube videos. So of course, they released a newer one that’s more powerful, for the same price, after I got mine. I won’t be buying a Chromebook again.

Send it my way! I’ll find a use for it ^__^ Is yours the one with the Enoxys chipset?

Sure, just pay me the R5377 I paid for it. And no, it’s the one with the 1.66GHz Intel Atom. (I still use it for work, so I’m not really looking to give it away, that’d be a huge waste of the overpriced money I paid for it).

How on earth did it cost that much??? I thought the Chromebook initiative was designed to make it low-cost. I feel your pain.

It cost almost $600 at launch (3G version). It’s only NOW that the Chromebook is doing the ‘low cost netbook’ thing, after the previous models failed when people realized they were getting shafted.
