Yesterday, we linked to the teaser trailer for the upcoming film of Ratchet & Clank. It’s quite refreshing getting something that isn’t one of those all-too-typical game movie announcements that result in script re-writes, director changes and eventual cancellations. It really looks as if this is happening.
It turns out, however, that Ratchet & Clank isn’t the only Sony Computer Entertainment IP to be getting the movie treatment. Website Variety has revealed that the same studio that is working on the Ratchet & Clank film, Blockade Entertainment, is busy making a Heavenly Sword film as well. The direct-to-DVD film will be CG animated, but there is currently no release date for this project.
While Heavenly Sword didn’t exactly win over legions of fans on its gameplay alone (it brought nothing new to the hack-and-slash genre, and what it brought was arguably subpar) it did garner praise for its character design, story and voice acting. Those graphics were also, for quite some time, the best graphics anyone had ever seen on a console. So then, take away the gameplay and give us a story based on the characters and world that Ninja Theory created, and you have a recipe for a potentially great film.
