You didn’t like the XP system previously announced for
Thi4f Thief 4 Thief? Neither did anybody else, apparently, because Eidos Montreal has decided to drop it entirely, citing negative feedback from fans and – more obviously, perhaps – narrative consistency.
“The main goal of a thief should be to gain loot. Garrett is already the Master Thief, so we saw no need to have XP as a core mechanic,” explains game director Nic Cantin in a recent community Q&A.
“Fans might be surprised how often the devs go to the forum to see how things are perceived in the ‘real world’,” adds level designer Daniel Windfeld Schmidt. “This feedback is extremely valuable to us, so as you can imagine, the consistent reaction to the XP system was something that indicated we needed to revisit some design decisions.”
Game’s out in February 2014, with no XP system and presumably also no real resemblance to the original games either. I’ll probably get it anyway just so I can complain about how it’s nothing like Thief II, even though I played that game more than ten years ago and don’t even remember it that much.
