Local professional gamers Stephen “Ph4ntom” Cloete and Dimitri “Detrony” Hadjipaschali will be heading to Sweden to compete in Dreamhack Winter 2013’s international Quake Live tournament. The tournament starts on 28 November and boasts a total prize purse of 100 000 Swedish krona (roughly R150 000).
Both players were able to secure sponsors to pay for their largest expenses – the flights – and Detrony was able to fund most of his trip privately. However, in a remarkable showing by the local Quake Live community, over R7000 has been donated by various individuals to help Ph4ntom pay his way to Sweden.
In anticipation of their appearance, popular Quake Live shoutcaster Xhavier “zoot” Dhorne invited the players to compete in a South African special show match streamed live on his twitch channel ZootLive on Wednesday 23 October. Both players agreed that it was not their best possible performance, but it was an exciting contest nonetheless and in general the response from international viewers was positive.
There will be a field of 32 players for the tournament, including last year’s winner Sergey “evil” Orekhov and the infamous Anton “Cooller” Singov of Russia, Alexei “Cypher” Yanushevsky of Belarus and American Shane “rapha” Hendrixson.
Both Detrony and Ph4ntom are consistently ranked in the top ten worldwide on the ELO ranking website QLRanks. Ph4ntom has significant experience at international LAN events and is renowned for the hours of practice he puts in for big events, while Detrony has been described as “absolutely terrifying once he gets going.”
Most of the matches from the competition will be streamed live, with specific details to be announced shortly and you can find out more about the tournament and Dreamhack in general here. Let’s hope our boys can pick up a few big wins and do the entire South African eSports community proud – we’ll be watching!
