Or else it won’t play your games. In a recent interview with Engadget, Microsoft senior director of product management Albert Penello shed light on the importance of this update. When asked what the Xbox One would do on day-one without the update, Penello answered, “Nothing. You need the Day One update”.
Golly, that’s a bit extreme. It’s pretty easy to understand what this means, but essentially you’ll be bringing home a VCR-shaped brick if you don’t have a functional internet connection. Penello further said that, “You’re gonna need to take this update. It’s not gonna be really an optional thing”
I recently reported that PS4 will also need a day-one update, the big difference is that you can still play games on it without an internet connection. It seems Microsoft are once again taking steps backwards by forcing users to connect to the internet to use their system as anything else besides a conversation piece.
So how does this affect us? Well, not at all until 2014 when we’ll actually get the console. Maybe by then the update will be included onto game discs. And everyone who reads this probably has a stable internet connection, so they won’t be too inconvenienced.
