Well gee-whiz it’s been a tumultuous ride leading up to the release of Thief. The game was announced; the game disappeared; fans shrieked; the game came back with a new name; the game turned into a reboot; fans shrieked; a new voice actor came on board; fans shrieked; a Focus mode was added to help out at points; fans shrieked; gameplay was released; fans shrieked; developer Eidos Montreal listened to fan angst and changed things; fans still shrieked. I’ll admit that even I hit a pessimistic low at one point, but then I realised that I wasn’t one of those die-hard original Thief fans anyway, so I pretty much have nothing to lose with this reboot.
The good news is that the game has now gone gold, which means the final version discs have left Eidos Montreal and are probably being printed in super-giant factories right this moment. To celebrate the game’s completion, Eidos and publisher Square Enix have released a lengthy six minute trailer entitled “Thief 101”, which gives you a rundown of the game’s equipment, systems and challenges. Basically, it’s a last, thorough look at the game before Thief lands in consoles and PCs all over the world.
Thief is hitting PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One on 28 February for us here in South Africa. NAG Online’s Nic Simmonds recently went hands-on with the game, but came away feeling a little underwhelmed. You can read all about that here. Alternatively, check out the new trailer below.
