MGSA funds R25,000 bursary in under four days

Make Games South Africa, our local game development community and association, has surpassed its goal of raising R22,728 to fund two students to study game design this year via the Wits University game design programme.

MGSA set up a page on Thursday afternoon last week requesting urgent funding for two students – Thsetso Gift Radebe and Tumelo Thabane – so that they’re able to study game design at Wits this year. By midday on Sunday the goal amount had been raised with a few thousand rand to spare.

MGSA committee chairperson Nick Hall explained: “The community has been looking at the possibility of creating our own bursary to help get more enthusiastic students studying game design but this was our first opportunity to really show our support in this way.”

Long term, MGSA is looking to expand the programme to a full bursary and possibly a scholarship and internship programme.

You can still donate to the fund, with any extra money going towards setting up the full bursary programme.

I was surprised that they reached this goal in such a short time. This is just to show that there are some interest in game design and that the community can come together and help those that need it.

Yeah it was pretty cool to see it funded so swiftly :). Two donations from local game studios made up about half the funds, so that helped quite a bit :P.

Do you know which two local game studios they are? I might just send my CV and portfolio over to them… I just wish that something like this was available three years ago so that I could study this too. Luckily two years ago, Learn3D gave me a discount on studying game development with them, so that’s good. (I’m wondering if I should set up some kind of donation thing up for myself to upgrade my crappy old pc)

It was QCF Design and RogueCode, I believe :). They’re likely not to be looking for employees, though. Rather ask them for feedback and advice on your portfolio/CV – I’m sure they’d be glad to help out :).

Yeah we’re going to try set up a lot more workshops so that people in a similar position to you can begin learning game development and start making awesome stuff too :D.

Ok, cool. I am proud of this, the community came together and this has restored my faith in humanity. I will get in contact with them as well as Luma Acrade.

Side note: I studied one year at The Open Window, and the next I was at Learn3D studying their game development course. I work full time now, but I do want to go back and study again and gain some more knowledge.

This is the degree I’m actually hoping to get. Good news, for once

I’m doing the Wits Game Design course – so fire away if you have any questions :P.
