Wolfenstein coming soon, with Doom beta access

omg2

Bethesda has fired an epic double-barrelled shotgun of news by announcing that Wolfenstein: The New Order will be released on 23 May 2014 and those who pre-order will gain beta access for the next Doom game. Yes, take a moment and let that sink in. As the world’s biggest id Software fan [Second biggest. Maybe third or fourth even. We'll need a NAG Quake match to be sure. – Ed.] I think I’ve gone and wet myself. Why? Not only will “the FPS legend that started it all [return] this May” (as Bethesda puts it), but we also have confirmation that the Doom game id began completely reworking last year – after years of developmental problems – is potentially nearing a beta stage.

The Doom news trumps the Wolfenstein news for me, largely because MachineGames is handling the development of The New Order (albeit using the id Tech 5 engine) and not id Software themselves. Which isn’t to say that the upcoming Wolfenstein game doesn’t look good – quite the opposite in fact. It looks brilliant and it seems as if it might be able to stay true to the series’ gung-ho, Nazi-killing roots whilst keeping up with the trends of more modern shooters. Watch this trailer if you don’t believe me:

Set in an alternate reality where the Nazi regime has used mysterious advanced technology to win World War II, the game puts you back in the shoes of iconic protagonist B.J. Blazkowicz. The now dominant Nazi force rules the globe with an iron fist and it is up to you to travel across Europe on a harrowing mission to bring down the Nazi war machine. It’s standard stuff for a Wolfenstein title, but the gameplay and visuals look superb. Sadly, there will not be a multiplayer component to the game.

As for the Doom beta, no other details were released by Bethesda which is a bit disappointing. After Tim Willits’ previous comments that the game in development simply lacked “soul” or “personality”, it is at least encouraging to hear something more about the title.

I feel like it's the early nineties and I've just been given both of these to play for the first time.

Wolfenstein: The New Order will release on 23 May 2014 for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One and Xbox 360.

Probably the lamest way i have ever seen a game get revealed. “Oh by the way there’s a beta coming with this game we want you to buy”

No reveal trailer and no big announcement. weird.

I’m sure they’ll up the marketing closer to the time. The fact that they’ve dropped the 4 and are just calling it the next Doom game is also interesting.

Agreed. The “we’ll use another game’s fans as a means of boosting sales of a less exciting game” tactic is detestable.

If that NAG Quake game is a genuine possibility, I’m more than ready. In fact I’m logging into Quake Live right now.
