The developers behind Worms, Worms 2, Worms 2: Armageddon, Worms 3, Worms 3D, Worms 4: Mayhem, Worms Battlegrounds, Worms Blast, Worms Crazy Golf, Worms Forts Under Siege, Worms Pinball, Worms Revolution, Worms World Party, Worms: Open Warfare, Worms: Ultimate Mayhem, and other Worms-related games will be making their first non-Worms title since their top-down shooter series Alien Breed (which was also quite good). The game is called Flockers and is described by Team17 as “a twisted blend of Lemmings inspired gameplay and Tim Burton style macabre”. Which sounds, in my opinion, brilliant.
Effectively what this means is that players will be guiding a helpless flock of sheep past lethal machinery and traps in order to escape the Worms’ weapons factory. No doubt the game will topped off with a dose of classic Worms humour whilst remaining a twisted take on the traditional Lemmings-style A to B puzzler.
Players will guide the sheep past deadly traps by giving them new abilities, allowing them to leap from ledges, run up walls, and explode to open new paths. Sheep can also be arranged in formations to reach – or avoid – certain areas. A level editor will be included in the game to allow players to create and share their own sheep-destroying layouts.
The game will include challenges such as attempting to finish levels with as many sheep deaths as possible (as opposed to saving as many as possible) and the developers have focused strongly on the tone of the title. “There’s a juxtaposition of these really cute characters that you’re trying to save [against] this really perilous environment,” Team17 mentioned in an interview with Digital Spy. “If you can bring in some really brutal deaths then that’s going to enhance that sense of danger and [make you] want to save the poor little sheep.”
Flockers will be debuting on Steam Early Access in the next few months.
