Insomniac Games (the guys behind franchises like Ratchet & Clank as well as Resistance) have finally lifted the lid on their hyper-colourful, third-person shooter, Sunset Overdrive. An Xbox One exclusive, Sunset Overdrive pits you against a mutant outbreak brought on by a new energy drink called “Overcharge Delirium XT”. The hyper-sugary goop basically turns the civilians of a city into fleshy, pink mutant psychopaths that spurt orange gunk when you blow them to bits. So think along the lines of a more light-hearted Dead Rising, but with way, WAY more colour and irreverent humour.
Core to the game is the traversal system, which utilises velocity to help you grind along power-lines (of course), run along walls and leap off cars. You get to do all of that while shooting a bunch of icky mutants with an array of bonkers weaponry. That’s possibly the part I’m most excited about: the game’s weapons. A gun that shoots teddy bears tied to explosives? Check. A gun that launches RC helicopters that hover above enemies, unloading clips? Yep!
You can find a detailed, four-minute look at gameplay and core mechanics after the jump. The game looks like tremendous amounts of fun.
Sunset Overdrive is out on Xbox One sometime during our spring in South Africa, which is more or less around the time the Xbox One is launching for us as well. It’s like it was meant to be!
