Hunger is a new IP from a Swedish development team called Tarsier Studios. You might have heard of Tarsier: they were the team responsible for bringing Media Molecule’s adorable LittleBigPlanet to the PlayStation Vita. They also helped work on the original LittleBigPlanet and its sequel for PlayStation 3. Hunger, which is a working title for now, is their first original IP, and it’s coming to PlayStation 4 thanks to Sony Computer Entertainment.
In Hunger, which is billed as a “third-person 3D action adventure game with stealth and exploration elements,” players take on the role of a little girl called Six. She’s been kidnapped and taken to work in an underwater resort that’s charmingly named The Maw. I know where I’m booking my next holiday.
In The Maw, Six is made to look after the wealthy elite clientele that frequent this underwater holiday destination. It certainly doesn’t look like a very lovely place, and judging by the few pieces of concept art released so far, the denizens of The Maw aren’t lovely people – in fact, they’re bloated, icky monsters. This gives Six a “glimpse at the corrupt heart of modern happiness,” as the developers put it.
Naturally, Six is given a chance to escape The Maw, and so starts the game’s adventure and stealth elements.
It sounds pretty intriguing, doesn’t it? I’m getting a strong Spirited Away vibe from the premise. I’m also getting flashes of Machinarium thanks to the colour pallet in that concept art.
It’s still very early days for Hunger, but I’ll be keeping my ravenous eye on this one, assuming eyes are capable of being ravenous. If not, then I’ll just keep an eye on it and let you know when there’s something new.
