We’re covering E3 2014 (semi-live) and next up is Electronic Arts! Lets see what these guys have in store.
9:58 That’s all for now! Ubisoft’s conference will follow in about two hours. Stay tuned!
9:57 Oh wait. I remember now that BF4 stalled on the Xbox One when Microsoft revealed it exclusively last year. Coincidence?
9:56 After the show, the beta is now live and EA had a stand of 64 PS4s with Hardline available for attendees. Nice catch, Sony!
9:55 PS4 owners get to play the beta today. PS4 only. Only today.
9:54 Battlefield Hardline beta starts today, runs until launch. Hmmmmm.
9:54 Ooooooh boy, you failed that one. You lost the loot.
9:53 You know, it’s still Battlefield, but not noticeably so that you’d mind.
9:52 “Levelution.” Ding!
9:51 Why did no-one make a cops vs robbers game before?!
9:50 Hey, it’s on PS4 as well. Cool.
9:48 Oh look, Battlefield 4 assets.
9:47 There’s some gameplay in a “Heist” match with 32 players. The robbers have the loot, the cops have to stop them.
9:45 And now a short clip of Battlefield: Hardline. Yeah. The worst-kept secret this year.
9:44 “The NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO scream.” Ding!
9:42 Still powered by the Ignite engine, which won’t be used on ex-gen consoles and won’t be used on PC either. Meh.
9:40 Mirror’s Edge will probably be a 2015 title anyway. Onwards to FIFA 15. Wow, what a surprise!
9:38 My waifu, the digital version.
9:36 “We’re doing things differently at EA and we want your input and feedback on future concepts and products that we’re working on.”
9:36 Dawngate is also a thing, another MOBA to challenge DOTA2 and LoL (spoiler: no-one can better DOTA2).
9:32 Now there’s some talk about Madden. Yes, that game called football, which is almost as hardcore as South African rugby.
9:30 Interestingly, it doesn’t use the Ignite engine, but that’s probably for eye candy reasons. PGA doesn’t need to run at 60fps. Hey, maybe it’ll use Mantle!
9:30 Yes, there’s a course that has the battleship from BF4’s Paracel Storm map that will be a part of the landscape.
9:29 “Golf without limits” – a new PGA, using the Frostbite engine.
9:28 Matt – It should be called Go Pro: The Game.
9:27 It looks like a simulator that will allow you to feel what it’s like to be a member of Nitro Circus, or Redbull extreme athletes.
9:26 A new Criterion game! That will probably not be Need for Speed!
9:26 “There’s no way we can keep this a secret anymore.”
9:25 Also, tesselated ass. Now with distance. That’ll be $6 please.
9:24 CGI trailer, obviously, but it’s another franchise that sees growth every year, even if it’s a more niche sport.
9:24 NHL 2015 up next. Tesselated ass, guys.
9:22 UFC 2014 launches 17 June 2014 in the US.
9:20 There’s some gameplay of Lee versus BJ Penn.
9:19 Bruce Lee! A new UFC by EA Sports. Its one of their fastest-growing franchises, actually.
9:18 YOUR SIMS CAN DIE OF LAUGHTER. You can go home now, EA.
9:18 7 September 2014.
9:17 There’s a new community store of Sims created by other players that you can share and invite into your world with their own personalities and character traits.
9:16 Don’t annoy grandma, kids. She’ll klap you.
9:16 Oddly, there was more applause for Sims than there was for Halo: Master Chief edition.
9:15 Aaaaaaand now it’s the Sims. I have nothing against Sims, I’m just not drawn to that genre anymore.
9:13 Some blurbs about the developers at Bioware working on the new consoles and how much more power they have. There’s ME3 somewhere in the screens they’re showing. There’s also an unnamed IP in the works.
9:12 7 October 2014. Anyone with any money in October is either going to spend it on rAge or games. True story.
9:10 Very nice. There’s also a “commander” mode, an idea leeched from Battlefield. EA, please don’t tell me you’re turning into Ubisoft.
9:08 Bringing a new Dragon Age to this gen is going to be a big decider for EA because this will be the second (possibly third) game to use the Frostbite 3.0 engine on consoles.
9:07 Such trailer. Many graphic. Much tesselation. Wow.
9:06 We begin with some live music from Inquisition.
9:05 Matt – He looks like a lesser Bond villian.
9:04 Whatsisface from EA Sports (now the CEO) is talking about how EA is all about the players this time round.
9:03 The show opens with Battlefront. DICE is going into a lot of detail to make it as authentic as possible. But of course, I couldn’t write or screenshot that, because many of the streaming services are failing me. Bleh.
9:02 After Twitch died again, Youtube died. So now we’re on IGN’s stream.
8:58 I think we’re on. Maybe.
8:51 AMD’s AM1 platform is also interesting, but less competitive overall when you put in a regular Haswell Pentium next to it. A 25W chip was never going to outpace a 55W dual-core anyway.
8:49 In the meantime, though, I can tell you that things change a lot in the bottom rung. I would have preferred that the Pentium G3258 was available already, but we’ll have to make do without it for now.
8:47 By the way, this E3 is playing havoc with my System Builders guides. Those will be at least a day late while I recuperate from tonight, because I’m staying up until about 5AM.
8:45 Although Microsoft has to be commended in the way they handled everything.
8:42 This just popped up in my Twitter stream. It pretty much happened. Also I didn’t see any Quantum Break (probably 2 seconds of it in that montage at the end) but not much else about what could be their other system-seller for 2015.
8:26 Yay! Twitch is working again. I hope it stays that way.
8:21 Also noted was that games now look a lot more polished and have more on-screen action. The developers are clearly getting a lot more familiar with the hardware on-board both consoles and it’s paying off in bigger and better games. Normally this kind of genre growth takes three or more years, at least it did with ex-gen consoles.
8:19 A huge trend of Microsoft’s show was a lack of Kinect features and a move to co-op games, so this will probably be mirrored in EA’s showoff as well. That’s the industry trend, generally.
8:18 So what will EA show? Almost certainly a new Mirror’s Edge, Battlefield Hardline and Star Wars: Battlefront. There will probably be some other Star Wars games as well because it’s the biggest franchise they have recently received the rights to develop games for.
8:10 While we wait for the EA conference to begin, I’m going for a bathroom break. Too many games for me.
