Xbox One SA launch and pricing revealed

xbox_one_console_sa

We’ve just received word from Microsoft that the Xbox One will be available in South Africa on 23 September 2014. We will be getting two options resulting in two different prices: you can pick up an Xbox One console with a 500GB hard drive, 14 day Xbox LIVE Gold trial, and a single controller for R6,299.99. Alternatively you can throw in a Kinect sensor and pay R7,999.99 if you want to talk to your TV and wave your hands around.

Microsoft’s press release mentioned that Forza Horizon 2 and the Halo: Master Chief Collection will be available alongside the console when it launches in September. Both titles were unveiled last night during Microsoft’s pre-E3 media briefing. They’ve also promised more news on game and console bundles closer to the release date. We’ll keep you updated as soon as we know more.

I expected worse. Without the kinect 6299 really isnt bad.

  • Nahuel Graziani

This is ridiculously priced, I’m sorry. I know launch consoles are always really highly priced, but this is an absurd amount of money.

I can literally make a payment against my house and still have leftover money for a bottle of whiskey for R8000.

    • Squirly

I guess it’s a matter of priorities. You and I look at that price and can’t help but compare what we pay for other, arguably more important things.

That price is nuts, but then I haven’t bought a console in years, nevermind at launch.

      • Nahuel Graziani

For R8k, it better give me a handjob every time I power it up.

        • Squirly

Is that one of the kinect features touted by MS?

  • $$$

    Thats like R16 = 1$…… ouch

    • charl van staden

      No. It’s R10

I’ll just get mine as soon as FNB has it available… can’t wait!!! Forza Horizon 2 looks amazing. 100 hours of single player gameplay… I’m in love!

    • Ashton Matadin

      Same here! =D

  • Shannon

    PS4 was roughly R10 000 so this seems reasonable for a launch…

    • http://www.facebook.com/pages/Wesley-Fick/184346154999538 Wesley Fick

No, it wasn’t. Maybe if you include the PS Camera along with a vertical stand and the charging mount for a controller and the R6799 launch price for the console. And an extra controller. And a launch game.

    • Justin Adam

It was not R10 000. This is cheaper than PS4 at launch. (Excl. Kinect)

  • Ashton Matadin

Why wouldn’t one want the Kinect? This price was expected. If anything I expected R500 more.

    • rooislangwtf

Because the Kinect is crappy and a waste of money?

      • Sharpnsexyoak

I beg to differ here, have you used it yet? I have, and I’ve got to say it’s pretty darn impressive… if a touch on the gimmicky side.

        • rooislangwtf

It made the console under-perform (reason enough), there is (almost?) no good games for it and now there probably is not going to be (except dance games I would never play), it’s not as good as just using a controller making it pointless, it couldn’t understand what I was telling it half the time, motion controls is tiring and looks lame.

  • flushtwice

*sigh* one day, one day… damn you S.A currency! damn you and such!

  • http://www.brightestlight.me/ Brightest Light

I don’t know why people b*tch about the pricing for the Xbox One. Look at how much smartphones are these days in comparison! The Xbox one will be my gaming AND media centre – worth every penny as long as there aren’t any RROD-like problems. As I’m a gadget freak I’ll get the Kinect as well :)

    • http://www.facebook.com/pages/Wesley-Fick/184346154999538 Wesley Fick

There’s just the issue of how bad our currency is in relation to other countries. There’s almost a R3000 price bump on the console with Kinect. There’s a R1700 gap between the Kinect-less console and the original bundle. It’ll sell, sure, but not in the kinds of numbers that people will expect.

      • http://www.brightestlight.me/ Brightest Light

Yup Wesley, I DEFINITELY agree with the currency & import duties issues – It’s crazy! I had the same gripe when buying my car, my phone, and anything you can get at half the price abroad. SA is a Southern Hemisphere outpost as far as I’m concerned – goods have to travel quite some way to get here… and then the government wants to pay for their luxuries before we can have ours :) . At the end of the day, as much as we think it’s a necessity, the Xbox One is a luxury you have to prioritise realistically. Unfortunately being realistic is not one of my strengths ;)

        • http://www.facebook.com/pages/Wesley-Fick/184346154999538 Wesley Fick

And unfortunately for Microsoft SA, people will only pick it up when the price drops a little lower. I don’t see anyone reaching for Kinect, it’s not worth the extra spend at that price.

If they charge launch prices for retail copies of games that will be over a year old on the 23rd, then that won’t help their cause either.

          • http://www.brightestlight.me/ Brightest Light

Yeah, I have to admit if I wasn’t a big Forza fan I’d be looking at the PS4, especially with MS’s take-it-or-leave it attitude lately. MS has however made a big effort to listen to the gamers lately, but it’s a business, and they’re in this to make money, period.

    • Sharpnsexyoak

That’s an interesting way to think of it… come to think of it my phone cost me more than my Xbox One, wait… Almost double! (Bought it in the USA a few months back).

The Xbox One isn’t perfect but I’m enjoying the hell out of it and once it gets local content/servers I’m sure it will be even better! To top it all off Microsoft releases monthly updates which address a number of user complaints regarding the system, making it better and better as time goes on. The original release is very far removed from what will be on the market in SA come September.

      • http://www.brightestlight.me/ Brightest Light

Yeah I love being part of the first few years of a console’s life. It’s NEW NEW NEW all the time, and even a simple console update sparks that kid in you that’s bouncing with glee and curiosity… ok glee is such a strong word… nope, glee it is!

        • Sharpnsexyoak

Haha, Good on you mate! Yeah I gotta admit I troll the net sometimes looking for what’s coming next in the update department (Still waiting for voice messaging to be added…).

As for the Kinect, I don’t use the gestures much but the voice control is really very nice. Nothing quite like being able to sit on your ass and tell it what to do because you’re either busy or just too damn lazy to get the controller.

  • Errol Cason

That is actually a bit cheaper than I expected since the PS4 now retails for R6800, it also launched at R6300 ($499 in the US) but got an increase thanks to crappy Rand, so I was expecting at least R6800 vir the kinect-less $499 Xbone.

    • Me

      PS4 is R6299 at takealot.com mate

  • charles

Na for the same price as PS4, I’ll rather go for a PS4!!!!!

  • Justin Adam

The PS4 is R6300 (Takealot), the eye costs R900 separately. The Xbox One at launch is the same price as the PS4 is going for. The bundle is ridiculously priced though, R8000 is a shit load of money. If you can buy it overseas :p

  • Irfaan Ebrahim

Talking about Xbox One I just received mine the other day from Dubai and guess what? It’s amazing!!! Kinect is so responsive couldn’t believe the change since previous one. Graphics on the Xbox One is unbelievably awesome and the setup of dashboard is also just brilliant.
