Bungie re-recording Dinklage’s voice-over for Destiny

moon_harry

Once people had tried a slice of Destiny during the June alpha period, one thing became apparent: there was a portion of players (and media outlets) that felt Peter Dinklage’s voice acting was “wooden” and “dull”. For those who perhaps don’t realise, Peter Dinklage is in vogue thanks to his outstanding portrayal of Tyrion Lannister in HBO’s TV series Game of Thrones. If you’re still scratching your head and don’t know what Game of Thrones is, then I’m afraid there’s not much hope for you.

Dinklage plays the role of your Ghost AI companion in Destiny. He’s basically the one who talks to you the most throughout the game, relaying mission objectives, providing observations on enemies, and giving you the history of each area you visit. The negative reaction to Dinklage’s performance came to a head in the midst of the alpha, and culminated in Bungie releasing a T-shirt that played-up Dinklage’s now infamous line: “That wizard came from the moon!”

Bungie has since addressed this issue in a recent update on the Destiny website. Dinklage’s voice-over has already been re-recorded for the beta, and will likely be recorded and polished yet again before the game releases in September. Secretly I’m hoping that they don’t alter the wizard-moon line from the alpha, because that’s now reached meme status and should be cherished forever as a textbook example of “so bad it’s good” writing and voice-acting.

This is a bit unrelated but i feel I must mention it:

Just a note on this, “[if you] don’t know what Game of Thrones is, then I’m afraid there’s not much hope for you”.

I would imagine that there are at least some people on this site who are under the age of 18 and should not know about it. It’s not a bad thing, they’re better off. While the story of it is good, the best word to describe it is, “unnecessary”. I hope you know what I mean by that, otherwise there’s no hope for you :)

But we don’t need to get into this now. Just wanted to mention it for the readers.

I don’t think the age card really works these days. I know, it’s sad but that’s the reality :(

      Aaaaaanyway :D

        True I guess

You have a point, but I was getting at the fact that GoT is pretty much everywhere right now: books, TV, (bad) games, Internet memes by the truck load. You get the idea.

lol ja I see. All the advertising makes it impossible to avoid. It’s also like all the big AAA titles – they’re basically all 18. No one thinks of the children!

I hope that if Half Life 3 ever gets released, they will stick to an age restriction of 16 (like HL2) or lower – just to be different :P

Bungie is thinking of the children: Destiny got a Teen rating. I like their reasoning behind it: “We wanted our worlds to be a place people felt good about spending time in. We wanted our worlds to be worthy of heroes.”

Aha! That’s awesome news. Not all hope is lost :P

I prefered Cortana as a voice companion.
