During a recent panel held over the weekend at the San Diego Comic-Con, developers BioWare unveiled a prototype of the Mako as it will appear in the new Mass Effect game. Yes, that lovable land vehicle with the ridiculous physics engine (that resulted in equal parts hysteria and rage during the original 2007 title) is making a return.
According to the game’s producer, Mike Gamble, exploration is forming one of the primary focuses in the next Mass Effect game. As such we’re going to need a vehicle to drive around on unexplored planets. It sounds like we’re going to be spending a lot of time in the Mako, and to make sure that time is more enjoyable, BioWare has stated that we’ll be able to customise the vehicle.
Those reading this and reacting with terror are likely doing so thanks to some bad memories regarding the vehicle’s physics engine. The good news is that BioWare is well aware that the Mako divided audiences and consequently has invested a lot of time and effort to make it “as responsive as possible”. From the sounds of things they’ve still got some time to make absolutely sure they get it right, considering the game is still “years away”.
