Late yesterday afternoon, leaked images and an offscreen trailer for Ubisoft’s other Assassin’s Creed title made their way online. Ubisoft has since released official information on the game, and Assassin’s Creed Rogue is indeed the last-gen release that was codenamed “comet”. It’s coming to PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on 11 November. No PC or Wii U release.
In Assassin’s Creed Rogue you’ll play as an Irish character called Shay Patrick Cormac, which was rumoured a few months back. The same rumours suggested that Shay was going to be a Templar; that’s happening as well. Shay was an Assassin, but after a mission goes horribly wrong, Shay turns his back on the Assassin order. In response, the Brotherhood attempts to assassinate him, which prompts Shay to go rogue (there’s your title) and begin killing off his one-time Assassin brothers. He becomes an Assassin Hunter for the Templars; you can see Templar symbols on his outfit during the trailer.
The game is set in North America and Ubisoft is calling it the final chapter in the trilogy that included Assassin’s Creed III and Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. As such, expect to wrap up the Kenway story arc and see a few familiar faces.
There are three distinct locations that we’ll be exploring in Rogue: 18th century New York City, the frozen waters of the North Atlantic Ocean, and the River Valley of the American Frontier, which Ubisoft says mixes “seamless river navigation and ground exploration”. They’re billing this as an “open world” but expect something akin to Black Flag’s mix of separated large cities and a second, large ocean environment to explore.
Other points of interest are that Shay will have his own ship called The Morrigan, and ship combat will be a big part of the experience. That’s great news. New weapons include a puckle gun (read: machine gun of sorts) for The Morrigan as well as burning oil to leave a wake of fiery destruction behind your ship. Shay himself has his signature air rifle, which will offer a myriad bullet types for different situations. Here’s hoping Ubisoft expands beyond the now dull berserk/sleep bullet variations. Grenades will be a thing as well so expect some crafting elements to be included somewhere.

Assassin’s Creed Rogue is being developer by Ubisoft Sofia. The game’s director, Martin Capel, had this to say about the impending release:
“We know that there are many Assassin’s Creed fans with Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 consoles who want to get their hands on a new Assassin’s Creed game this year. Assassin’s Creed Rogue completes the North American saga started with Assassin’s Creed III and Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag and gives previous-generation console owners an exclusive opportunity to experience fan-requested features, such as playing as a Templar.”
