So, how many hours did you spend on leveling up that guardian of yours in the Destiny beta? Maybe you tried out all three of the classes? Perhaps you made sure to reach the level cap of eight as you explored the excellent beta and destroyed many, many things along the way? Regardless, Bungie has confirmed that all progress made in last month’s Destiny beta will be wiped, with players unable to carry characters across into the final retail version when it releases this September.
Bungie explained their decision by stating the following in an official blog post:
“Since the Beta, we’ve continued to tune and adjust the game. The way you earn experience has been adjusted up and down a bunch of times. Items have been added and removed. New features toggled. Although there’s no single monumental change, the sum of the tweaks leaves characters from the Beta Build in strange shape that would be confusing at best, broken at worst.”
Bungie also mentioned that beta characters will be quickly dwarfed by the final version’s level 20 guardians. They illustrated this point with a screenshot of senior artist Matt Bennier’s Warlock from the full version, kitted out in some very impressive (in appearance, at least) gear:
“Right now, you’re lamenting the loss of your starter gear, those pearls of mayhem of destruction that you carved from the wastes of Old Russia. Look beyond that horizon. We have exotic arms and armaments secreted away – adventures you can barely imagine right now.”
Considering that only a small percentage of beta players even managed to travel to the moon – and that players will be able to venture to other planets such as Mars and Venus in the final version of the game – this statement from Bungie seems justified.
Nevertheless, expect copious amounts of online grief from players who got a bit too attached to their characters.
