Team ICO’s once massively anticipated The Last Guardian – the spiritual successor to Ico and Shadow of the Colossus – has taken another step backwards as Sony abandoned the game’s American trademark this month. Despite many reports suggesting the game will still be produced, this is the latest in a string of developmental setbacks and delays that seem to suggest that the game will never see the light of day.
Some of the more loyal fans of the game are suggesting that it may simply be a renaming of the title, but considering that the game had no showing whatsoever at E3 2014 I think that is a hopeful argument at best. Sony Computer Entertainment’s president of worldwide studios Shuhei Yoshida has repeatedly asked fans to wait patiently as they “really don’t want to release piecemeal information until we can say this is The Last Guardian.” The waiting, however, appears to be in vain.
It’s worth noting that this is actually the second time Sony Computer Entertainment has abandoned the trademark. In August 2012 the same thing happened.
