Tomorrow Mortal Kombat X is finally out. I’m excited for two reasons: 1) the game will be out and I’ll get to play it; 2) the game will be out which means that the amount of articles we write about it will take a decided nosedive in regularity. I think I’m more excited about the second one, to be honest.
Anyway, here’s a spot of good/interesting news on the day before the game’s release. As we all know, Mortal Kombat X will have DLC characters to expand your vanilla roster of fighters. The good news is that you’ll be able to play with these characters without buying them. This is thanks to the game’s “Challenge Towers” mode.
There are three towers that periodically rotate in this gameplay mode. One of the towers, the “Premiere Tower”, will on occasion feature a DLC character. You’ll then be able to play as that character even if you haven’t purchased it.
The caveat: obviously you’re not going to have consistent access to the DLC characters; it will just depend on the towers’ rotations and the selected character at any given time. It does, however, mean you’ll essentially be able to sample all the DLC characters and then decide which ones you want to buy, if any.
It’s a pretty neat compromise really. It means that people get to “try before they buy” and it means that NetherRealm Studios gets to add neat gameplay modes that don’t lock out those players who haven’t coughed up for DLC.
