Well, this is unexpected. Microsoft has announced that there’s a Halo Wars 2 in the works, and that it’s being developed by Creative Assembly – them of Total War and Alien: Isolation. They’re being aided by 343 Industries, current curators of the Halo series.
Unlike the original game, which was exclusive to Xbox 360, this sequel is coming to both Xbox One and Windows 10 PCs. There’s a teaser trailer below, if you’re interested.
How’d you like that ‘ey? No, you’re right, it doesn’t show very much at all, beyond some CGI growling and soldier mans being dragged places. But, it’s Halo Wars 2! Isn’t that just the most excellent surprise? I’m quite pleased that it’s in the hands of Creative Assembly too, because it’s not like they have limited experience with the RTS genre. Except they did make Stormrise, a console RTS which is just… mostly tragic. Then again, they also made Alien: Isolation, which is great. Also, just watch this Total War: Warhammer footage. Who do we trust?
Anyway, Halo Wars was released back in 2009 and was the final round in the chamber of Ensemble Studios, original creators of Age of Empires. As far as swansongs go, Halo Wars was an excellent way for Ensemble to exit with a bang, quickly proving that a real-time strategy game designed specifically for consoles was not the most outlandish of prospects. In other words, I liked it. I liked it a lot.
