First announced last year at E3 2015, the PC version of Gears of War: Ultimate Edition is finally out in the wilds, trailing the Xbox One release of the game by about six months. It’s only available for Windows 10, so if you’ve not yet made the upgrade to Microsoft’s latest OS this might be the final bit of convincing you need. You can grab it off the Windows Store right now for $29.99, or about R400.
There’s more to learn by breaching the break.
This Xbox Wire post announcing the launch of the game explains that the extra development time pumped into the PC version has allowed them to do “a whole lot of work under the hood” to ensure that the game is properly optimised for PC. More powerful machines will enjoy smooth 60fps gameplay and support for 4K resolution video in the game’s single-player portion, and will apparently perform similarly well in multiplayer matches.
To get much the same visual experience as what’s present in the Xbox One version, the game’s “medium” setting is what you should aim for. The developers are quick to point out that they haven’t messed with any of the fundamental aspects that make Gears of War so popular during their revamping of the game for PC. In other words, it’ll still be the game everyone knows and loves, but much shinier.
Tarryn was quite taken with the Ultimate Edition when it launched on XBO, and her then soon-to-be husband Gareth Runnalls wrote a brilliant, heartfelt piece for us explaining why Gears of War played a monumental role in him meeting the love of his life. D’aaaw!
