I’m told by People Who Know Things that the recent multiplayer beta for Doom did not fare so well. “It’s almost universally hated,” is the exact sequence of words they used. Ouch.

Thankfully, Doom‘s never been about the multiplayer for me. I’ve got Quake for that, thanks. If your feelings are similar and you’ve got just over an hour to kill (which I don’t, because the universe is cruel), you’ll be happy to hear that Bethesda and id have released a big ol’ video walkthrough of the game’s single-player campaign.

The video is divided into three segments, with the person playing (Hugo Martin, the game’s creative director) jumping ahead in the campaign to show off what you can expect from the game’s later levels. Obviously, this means you may have a bunch of enemy types and environments spoiled for you should you choose to watch, so stay away if you’d prefer to go in with a clean slate.

I’ve only been able to watch bits of it in bite-sized chunks because time is limited, but to me the best thing about the footage is the developer commentary that runs throughout. It imparts a bunch of nutritious knowledge on id’s intentions with the game, and why they made the design decisions they have. It also contains this excellent quote, which perfectly sums up the core of the series: “Doom‘s about fighting demons and using awesome guns.” Yes.

The game’s out on May 13th for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
