Developer Studio Wildcard has added an ARK: Survival Evolved PC update that includes support for “The Center”, a really-spectacular, spared-no-expense free Official Mods map that almost doubles the size of the in-game world and even got creator Ben Burkart a job on the team. They do move in herds.
“The Center is filled with stunning lighting effects, lava rivers, giant picturesque mountains, misty floating islands, ancient underground ruins, enormous ice caves, and of course beyond the breathtaking sights there lay dangerous threats and mysterious secrets to unravel with you and your tribe mates,” said Studio Wildcard in the update notes.
“The Center was crafted completely by hand without any auto-generated content, it will use its own save data, with separate options to reset the save data for each individual map.”
Also, you can now toss dodos and dung beetles. What a time to be alive.
Over on Kotaku, ARK lead designer Jeremy Stieglitz explained that through the company’s Official Mods Program, content creators can potentially bank “a considerable amount of money” selling their mods.
“There’s no ARK Mod EULA that gives us any inherent rights to use their work, so it’s entirely up to these authors whatever they want to do when we contact them. But of course, for a mod author this program becomes a chance to have their work featured in front of a huge audience (6 million strong) as well as be paid for it, and continue to develop it for that eager audience,” he said.
“Going forward, we intend to continue to regularly select what we consider to be the most and most polished Mods from among the many thousands available on Steam Workshop—often identified through open-entry cash-prize Mod Contests, such as the one we’re currently running, which we use to gauge community enthusiasm. And then when we determine what we think are the standout exemplars, we’ll make more offers.”
In the meantime, you can grab the free expansion over on Steam.
