To most, the name Osamu Tezuka probably means nothing, but in the anime and manga communities it’s highly respected. Tezuka was an artist famous for essentially creating the manga and anime styles as we know them today, and his extensive body of work is still popular and influential. A new digital collectible card game called Astro Boy: Edge of Time has launched a Kickstarter, bringing famous characters created by Tezuka into a shared sci-fi world.
The campaign is seeking $50,000 to develop the card game, which’ll feature single-player and multiplayer components. It’s set on The Sprawl, a futuristic space station populated by Tezuka’s creations. Players will embody “Summoners”, who summon characters to battle a demon invasion. The developers intend to expand the story with each new line of cards introduced.
The game looks promising. It has an innovative gameplay mechanic where your cards are played in one of two rows, and there’s a great deal of passion and ambition shining through. Osamu Tezuka’s son, Macoto Tezuka, is working on the project, and the developers have reimagined famous characters, such as Astro Boy, Black Jack and more to fit the world.
