Meet Jack. He’s just an ordinary guy in an extraordinary situation. Meet BT-7274. He’s a Vanguard-class mech. They’ve only just met.
THESE TWO UNLIKELY HEROES.
WILL FIND THEMSELVES IN A BATTLE.
AND TOTAL EXTINCTION.
… AND LOVE.
Okay, maybe not love. That’s probably not even legal. But hey, the bond between a man and his robot is something. And in the new Titanfall 2 campaign trailer, it’s everything.
Talking to The Verge, Respawn art director Joel Emslie and concept artist and modeller Kevin Andersen explain that the relationship dynamic between Frontier Militia rookie grunt turned ad hoc mech pilot Jack and BT, who are kind of stuck with each other at the start of the game, was inspired by ’80s buddy cop movies like Lethal Weapon.
“We took the titans from the first game, and we wanted to make one that emoted well for the player, so you could see what [BT] was feeling,” said Andersen. “But not be so cutesy like Short Circuit or a Wall-E. It still had to live in this war-torn, futuristic world. That’s where the design process for the main character for Titanfall 2 started for us.”
“Early on he was either like a little puppy dog that would follow you around, or he came off like a dick,” added Emslie. “When we got to this point where people started not liking him we knew we went too far.”
Game’s out on PC, Xbox One, and PS4 on 28 October.
