It may be difficult for any gaming youngsters to comprehend, but third-person shooters used to be waaaay different. It wasn’t really until the original Gears of War on the Xbox 360 that fluid, cover-based gameplay became mainstream. Rogue Trooper, released in 2006 for PC, PS2, and Xbox, was slightly ahead of its time, offering gameplay that would soon become the norm. Unfortunately, this little piece of gaming history is quite hard to come by, although you might find old copies in nearby… wait, nevermind. It’s getting a remaster.

It’s been rebranded as Rogue Trooper Redux, and is being worked on by Rebellion, who also developed the original. All we have so far is a short teaser trailer that doesn’t show gameplay or story, but it’s cool to see an under-appreciated gem getting a second chance. Rogue Trooper is based on the 2000 AD comic series of the same name, and is set during a futuristic civil war. Players control Rogue as he seeks revenge for the murders of his squadmates. Also, he’s a blue-skinned, genetically engineered super soldier, and the personalities of his dead squadmates now live inside his backpack, rifle, and helmet. Yeah, it was a weird game.

Rogue Trooper Redux will launch for Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, and Xbox One, although it only has a vague “coming soon” for a release date.
