Oh, what’s that? You don’t know what Agony is? Well, it’s “extreme physical or mental suffering”, but it’s also the name of a survival horror game currently in development for PC, PS4 and XBO. As you’ll see in its two latest trailers, “survival horror” doesn’t really cut it. Take your vision of hell and throw it out the window, because this is much, much worse.

I’ve played a lot of horror games, and I’ve seen… things, but I’ve never seen anything quite like Agony. Billed as “a first-person, survival horror set in hell”, it’ll see players thrust into the role of “a tormented soul within the depths of hell, without any memories about your past”. It’s being made by relatively unknown developer Madmind Studio, and it’s due out sometime this year.

The first trailer is a cinematic look at Agony‘s unsettling demons. If you’re not really into gory things, intense violence, and bouncy breasts, look away now.

Man, that warning wasn’t kidding around.

Next up is footage showcasing actual gameplay, and it looks okay, I guess. I mean, I like pretty much everything on offer, but it looks as though the combat could use more polishing.

“In this footage, protagonist controls one of the simple-minded demons called Onoskelis,” says Madmind. “She is a very powerful beast, but in order to control it, player will need to satisfy her primal urges by killing other beings or eating still beating hearts and fresh meat. Otherwise, she will push you out from her mind.” Sounds like wholesome fun for the whole family! In case you haven’t noticed the theme here, this trailer is also super NSFW.

Agony looks promising, and I love its bizarre, grotesque style. With a few tweaks here and there, more refined combat, and a stellar story, Agony could prove to be one of the coolest survival horror titles of 2017.
