It’ll essentially be a city builder, but with a dark and serious tone. You’ll need to make difficult decisions that may result in the deaths of a few, all for the sake of the greater good. None of that is really shown in its new cinematic trailer, but it sets the tone of things to come quite nicely.
“Become a leader of a steam-powered City, the last bastion of humanity,” reads the description. “Oversee your society, manage resources and make difficult, ambiguous choices. But whatever you do, always remember: The City Must Survive.”
“Frostpunk takes on what people are capable of when pushed to the limits. What interests us is what society [will] do to survive and how it changes in the process. How survival in the end leaves us different beings. If worse, better, stronger, weaker or, last but not least, more or less humane – that is debatable.”
In case you still hold any hope that your city will be a thriving, happy place to live, developer 11 bit studios told Eurogamer this: “If you look at references for survival in extreme environments, things like Amazon expeditions and crashes of planes in deep mountains where people don’t have anything to eat and they have to eat something… it gets pretty grim. We don’t shy away from that.” So, people eating people, just like Tarryn predicted.
No release date has been confirmed, other than sometime later this year, and currently the only confirmed platform is PC.
