I’d actually almost forgotten this was even a thing, even though I was madly in love with the first two games. Maybe that’s because it’s been in beta for about a million years, but the free-to-play sequel has now launched on Steam, and you know the thing about orcs. They must die. They must die. They must die.

I’ve not kept up much with Orcs Must Die! Unchained since its announcement in 2014, but it looks like its me-too MOBA aspirations – probably the reason I sort of lost interest – have been dropped, and it’s back to basics the same campy tower defence high jinks as the first two games. Besides the “classic white-knuckle witch’s brew of action and strategy” co-op campaign mode, it also adds a new 3v3 competitive mode called Sabotage, according to the press stuff.

“This fast-paced mode is a totally new way to play. Players assemble a team to defend their rift, but at the same time another team is playing on the same map in some… spooky… alternate dimension or something. These other players can distract your team with spells, minions, and huge bosses to make you lose rift points. But of course, players can pay ’em back by doing the same! The team with the most rift points at the end of the match wins.”

Orcs Must Die! Unchained is free on Steam with some premium stuff sold separately, and scheduled to drop on PS4 later this year.
