Right now Microsoft has a lot riding on PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, arguably the highest profile console exclusive in the Xbox One line-up. That exclusivity comes with some pretty serious fine print though – by now we all know it won’t last forever. Now a Bloomberg report is quoting unnamed sources saying that Microsoft and developer Bluehole Inc. are in talks regarding an extension of that all-important exclusivity.
This should come as no surprise. Microsoft needs to give people a reason to buy an Xbox One over a PS4, and right now PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is one of the biggest reasons in the gaming industry. According to people close to the matter, Redmond execs are hard at work (read: adding more zeros to that cheque) to keep this smash hit off Sony’s console.
As usual when it comes to delicate situations like this, Microsoft doesn’t have much to add. “Right now, the team is solely focused on bringing the best game possible to Xbox One and PC. We have nothing further to announce at this time,” a spokesperson said. We’ll have to see whether this deal ends up being enough to turn things around for Microsoft’s console.
