That headline may prove to be unintentionally misleading, once Blizzard reveals exactly what they have in mind for the Xbox One X enhanced version of Overwatch. That’s because when we all got our hopes up for 4K Overwatch on PS4 Pro, Blizzard pissed on our expectations with a half-arsed update which really came down to 4K overlays and text.
Hopefully the developers make better use of the Xbox One X’s superior (on paper, at least) hardware. It sounds like they’re having a bit of a love affair with Microsoft’s new console, going as far as to call it “incredible.”
“Overwatch team is excited with great possibilities Xbox One X opens,” read the Blizzard statement via Windows Central. “The team is currently exploring how the game experience can be enhanced on this platform to leverage the console’s incredible hardware, and is working on implementing 4K resolution in the game on Xbox One X. It is very important for the team to make sure the user interface looks natural on a truly big screen. We will share more details about our plans for 4K support on Xbox One X later.”
The bit that worries me is “to make sure the user interface looks natural”.
Don’t worry about the user interface, Blizzard, seriously, don’t let that be the focus. Make the actual gameplay in proper 60fps 4K, okay? If the update details eventually come out and I read that “we’ve upped the UI to 4K” and the rest of the game is still in 1080p or whatever it’s called, I’ll be genuinely annoyed. Still, at least they called the console “incredible”, right? It must be a happy time to be on Team Xbox again. It really has been tough going for the last few years. People started blacking out their Master Chief tattoos and everything.
Native 4K, Blizzard. Make it happen.
