Microsoft has lined up the first batch of free Games with Gold for 2018, and it’s business as usual: two Xbox One games and two backward compatible Xbox 360 games to get your 2018 started. It’s hardly an exciting selection to kick off the year, sadly, but hey, don’t look a gift horse in the mouth, right?

Your freebie from the first of January is The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing 3, the final instalment in the largely forgettable Van Helsing trilogy. You probably already own the first part of the trilogy, as it was part of Games with Gold way back in December 2015, so if you enjoyed that, this is more of the same.

Starting on 16 January, the second Xbox One title will be zombie apocalypse survival schlockfest, ZOMBI, a port of what was originally a Wii U launch title in 2012. It was another solid 7/10 release back in 2015, but hasn’t aged all that well. Still, if you’re into zombies and free games, do your thing.

In terms of Xbox 360 titles, Tomb Raider: Underworld will be available from 1 January. Longtime franchise fans will remember this one as a return to form after a few off-colour years for Lara, so it’s definitely worth a look. Army of Two takes over from the 16th, through until the end of the month. If you were around in the Army of Two days, you would remember that it was hugely hyped and hugely average, but still a bit of fun if you’ve got a friend to bang along with you in co-op mode.

Right, so that’s that for January, courtesy, as always, of Major Nelson.
