Diablo 3 really is the gift that keeps on giving, isn’t it? The game is a bazillion years old, yet Blizzard won’t let it retire in peace – there’s always a new update, a new playable class, a new something, somewhere on the horizon. As a case in point, last year’s limited-time The Darkening of Tristram anniversary dungeon crawl thing is up and running again, and if you were a fan of the original Diablo then you can’t afford to miss this.

Originally a headline feature of The Anniversary Patch for Diablo 3, The Darkening of Tristram is a 16-level dungeon adventure triggered by killing certain cultists in the main game. With its pixelated overlay, retro user interface, and tons of creatures and bosses ripped from the original game, this is true fan service for those of us who sat up past the witching hour playing the first Diablo.

We covered this event last year, so go back and have a look at it in action. I’ve taken a break from Diablo 3 of late, but considering that the first Diablo ranks up there alongside the original Quake and GTA IV as one of my best games of all time, I reckon I’ll fire it up one more time to try The Darkening of Tristram. This special event will only be available until 30 January, so you’d best get stuck in if you want to score all that extra loot and enjoy some classic point-click-stab-kill gaming.
