Cancel your VPNs, guys. Music streaming service Spotify is sending out invites to a press event in Joburg next week Tuesday, promising “some news to share”, and that means it’s maybe, probably, but almost definitely prepping a local launch.
More or less confirming speculation since a job listing was posted on Spotify’s website for a “Senior Editor/Music Programmer – South Africa” in September last year (now removed, but Stuff has saved it forever), it’s also about time. We’ve got Google Play, Apple Music, and, uh, Joox, but with almost 160 million subscribers and more than 35 million songs, Spotify is one of the planet’s hottest music streaming service, and besides, we’re all about diversity in the Rainbow Nation.
A premium, ad-free Spotify subscription costs $9.99 per month for one user, or $14.99 per month for a family plan of up to six users – that’s the same as Google Play costs in the US, although local pricing is adjusted at a somewhat reduced rate, so we should be able to expect something around R60 and R90 respectively for Spotify. Or not. I dunno. I guess we’ll find out soon enough.
