If you’re a child of the ’80s and ’90s, you probably grew up with The Karate Kid. For you young’uns reading this and scratching your head, The Karate Kid was a popular movie franchise that chronicled the journey of teenagers training to become renowned fighters under the tutelage of Master Keisuke Miyagi.

The first movie, which was released in 1984, chronicles the rivalry between Daniel LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence, and ends with LaRusso winning a karate tournament and defeating Lawrence. [WHOA! Spoilers! 😛 – ed.] YouTube Red’s new series, Cobra Kai, picks up the story 34 years later.

In Cobra Kai, a much older Johnny Lawrence is down on his luck, having grown into an adult witnessing LaRusso’s continued good fortune – including his financial success in opening and running car dealerships, his marriage to an attractive wife, and his perfect family life. A series of events leads Lawrence to take on an apprentice and reopen the famous Cobra Kai dojo, becoming the resident master and training new students in karate.

It looks a little cheesy, but that’s in keeping with the style of the Karate Kid universe (aside from the 2010 remake). The series stars William Zabka and Ralph Macchio returning to their original roles, and the first season will be released all at once, consisting of ten 30-minute episodes.

Because the series is being broadcast via Youtube Red, you’ll need a Red subscription to watch it. South Africa is not a supported country for Red subscriptions, and we can’t purchase movies or series through the Google Play Store either. The only way in is via a VPN service that terminates in a supported country like the United States.
