Over the weekend, local esports org VS Gaming hosted the South African FIFA eWorld Cup Qualifier competition, with more than one thousand players kicking for a shot at goal – the Grand Final in Amsterdam next month.

“This was an historic moment for efootball in South Africa. Through this tournament South African players have now been given the international spotlight that they deserve,” says VS Gaming rep Wanda Mkhize. “We are proud of what we have been able to achieve this weekend. Over a thousand players competed to take on the worlds best and two of our South Africans will be able to compete on the world stage as a result. We are excited to see what the future holds for this sector.”

Taking home R400,000 cash each, Shiaan Rubeer and Thabo Moloi were top of the scoreboards on Xbox One and PS4 respectively, and both players will move on to the Global Series Playoffs event starting at the end of the month.
