Prinny [PSP]: Hardcore action platformer puzzler with tight physics and humerous story. You play one of a thousand Prinnies (you have 1000 'lives'), trying to get Etna the Ultimate Desert by finishing some seriously hard platforming sections. It looks stunning and is hard as hell, but oozes quality and focused design.

Brave Story [PSP]: I've not played a good jRPG like this since Breath of Fire 3 - it's based on a manga from start to finish so it has the same kind of plot rise and fall as the manga itself, which makes it involved. The combat is fast and focused with damage flowing over from a dead enemy to the next, so nothing gets wasted. It's beautiful to look at, and quite stunning for a PSP game.

Silent Hill Origins [PSP]: It's like Silent Hill 2 on your PSP but scarier. I almost dropped my PSP a few times from the frights, and the headphones makes the sound even more intense. You run around Silent Hill being scared, and when you reach a mirror you can 'swap' to the mirror-realm (think the movie), where **** gets weirder. Highly recommended if you're a Silent Hill 2 fan.

Dead Space,

The sound fx and innovative HUD by themselves make it worth the $$$.

Dead Space (any platform): Best 3rd person survival horror
Street Fighter IV (Xbox 360 & Ps3): Do u really need a reason?
Ninja Gaiden Dragon Sword (DS): Probably the best ds game except for...
Advance Wars Days of Ruin (DS): This is how strategy games should be done on the DS. A Must Buy!

I highly recommend Warhammer 40000: Dawn of War II! For those who love warhammer and strategy games.
Dead Space: Awesome survival horror game. It really makes a mark in terms of Atmosphere.

The Witcher: Never been a fan of RPGs (besides Fallout 3) but this game has pulled me in. The graphics are beautiful, even when I play it on low, the fighting is addictive and fun, there's a great level up system, great plot... and ze boobies!

Ninja Gaiden 2, most enjoyable hack and slash game ive actually played besides the devil may cry series :)

I honestly believe these games are worth playing, hard to find though. Wish they could make a new iteration of any one of them... if only i had 50 million dollars... :)

Battlezone 1 and 2 (enjoyed 2 more, loved the art direction)
Sacrifice
Giants Citizen Kabuto
Nomad Soul
Outcast

Hmmm, there are a ton of AAA titles I would recommend, however, they are AAA, so im sure everyone know what they are... and that they are worth playing.

The John DeFoe Quadrilogy (PC): Probably the best adventure game series I have played in an exceptionally long time. Superb story, amazing depth, top notch graphics and gameplay and an ending that is awesome. And the only adventure game series that will force you to think quickly (and make me suppress a scream :p).
All four are free to download:
5 Days a Stranger (http://www.fullyramblomatic.com/5days)
7 Days a Skeptic (http://www.fullyramblomatic.com/7days)
Triby's Notes (http://www.fullyramblomatic.com/notes)
6 Days a Sacrifice (http://www.fullyramblomatic.com/6days)

Warning: These games contain some very adult scenes with blood and guts, not advised for the squeamish.
And yes, it is made by Ben 'Yahtzee' Croshaw of Zero Punctuation.

@syvlyn: Choices of pure win. Nomad Soul is probably the best game I've ever played.
Mine:
deBlob (wii): Just the way your actions add to the music make it worth price of admission. And the cutscenes are awesome. It's just good innocent fun
Peggle (XBLA): You will lose your life to this game. More addictive than crack
World of Goo: Probably the perfect game, taking a simple concept, builiding on it in unexpected ways, with crisp and hilarious presentation
Shadow of the Colossus: Steal a PS2 if you must. Everyone should play this incredible game that reminds us why we're all gamers. Because nothing you ever do in real life will EVER be this epic.

Here's two adventure titles I'd recommend:

The Three Skulls of the Toltecs
The first two Broken Sword games.

All are really great, but good luck finding them, especially the 3 skull of the toltecs, I've been trying to find that one for quite some time now, people just love it too much to get rid of it.

If you looking for a platformer with big bosses, tons of weapons and moves, and cool cinematics, then Devil May Cry 4 is for you. I recommend playing the game on Devil Mode, Human Mode was made way to easy.

Fallout tactics - Strategy gameplay set in fallout universe
Broken Sword - Shadow of the templars - point and click adventure
Phantasmagoria - puzzle of flesh - disturbing point and click game.

Odin Sphere: Hard as an age old nut, but beautiful and rather unique.
Beyond Good and Evil: Lots of people have still missed this, it's still a joy to play.
Silent Hill 2: People need to play games that are actually true horror games :P

Prince of Persia: Sands of Time. <insert words that best describes> game ever period
Evil Genius.
Dungeon Keeper 2 (if you can find it)
Nomad Soul (deserves to be mentioned twice) I'm willing to sell mine for R400.

Nobody's yet recommended The Movies? It's only the best management game made in the past, irunno, 5-6 years. The poor game got eclipsed by Fable and Black and White, and it's probably better than either.

I took months to get to the year 1990 and then my harddrive crashed and I lost all my data. Never got the courage to do it all over again. Really great game though.

(hangs head in shame)...sorry, thought we should recommend games from this or last year.
Then here is others I recommend:
System Shock 2: You aren't a pc gamer until you've finished it once on hard or impossible
Blade Runner: Loved the story
Nomad Soul: Obvious Reasons
Beyond Good & Evil: Quite a unique adventure game
Diablo 2 Lord of Destruction: If I need to hand out explanations for this I'll smack you!
Septerra's Core: Brilliant PC RPG and a very unique story
Grim Fandango: Very Brilliant Point & Click adventure
Starcraft Broodwar: One of the best RTS from Blizzard
Fallout 2: Best turn based shooter in my regards except for...
Jagged Alliance 2: Also one of the best turn based shooters
etc.
etc.

List too large to go on. but this list of games you can still buy somewhere for roundabout R100 anywhere.

Sacred 2

Note many reviewers gave it much of a rating, but personally I love the game. It's pure HACK 'N SLASH RPG fun. I've been at it for about 56hrs, and only 19% or so of the game world is explored. It's definitely worth the effort while we all wait for Dragon Age: Origins

Elastomania - okay I don't know how you'd categorise it... but it's fun and it's free. Nuff said.

Plasma Pong - Its on one of the NAG DVD's I forget which one.

Knytt Stories - I just love the art style of this game.

Those are all free to download, just google 'em.

Crimsonland. Epic top down shooter.

Operation Flashpoint - should pick it up cheap nowadays. One of my all time favourites. Tough as nails, no nonsense, "This is WAR" awesomness.

Fable: The Lost Chapters: Incredible storyline and gameplay.
The Witcher (if you're 18 and older): Very good story line as well.
Bioshock: Amazing visuals and it's got "something different".
Far Cry: There's just something about setting a big veldt alight and watching zebra, gazelle or enemies burn. Plus it's got some Afrikaans in it - I find it very cool as I'm Afrikaans myself!
Way too many to name, but these are my favourites!

It's pricey, but easily obtainable from the Steam (http://store.steampowered.com/app/15700/) website. It's not too big either (Abe's Exodus was about 250MB if I remember correctly) so it's not too bad to download.

ok, lets go
RPG: Lionheart: legacy of the crusader, still one of my favourate rpgs to date although a bit old (it uses 2d graphics) but don't let that scare you off, it uses the same SPECIAL system as the fallout games
Racing: Pure, the only fault that I could find with this game is that the loading times are often quite long, but its a really fun 4-wheeler game where you can build your own from scratch and you can pull off some sick tricks using the forward and backward leaning controls.
Adventure: Still Life, it may be a bit grusome but it is really one of the best point-n-click adventure games out there
1st/3rd person shooter(depending on platform): Kane & Lynch, It might not have recieved outstanding reviews but the gameplay is good and the story is quite gripping which makes it really addictive.
RTS: too few have actually made the impact that I'm looking for here but I think I'll go with supreme commander. You haven't experienced anything until you have used the zoom feature in that game.

Pure was a really good game. I was a bit surprised at how well it turned out, and I think we've found the spiritual successor to SSX.
The only problem for me was that I finished it in one day. Other than that, it was a really fun game. The track designs were superb.

Sexybox360;
Crackdown & Viking: Battle for Asgard. Two games I thought were rather sadly overlooked.
Viva Pinata, once you get over what most will perceive as "girly" or "kiddy", there's a surprising amount to keep you absorbed.

DS:
Elektroplankton, fab little music toy.
Chibi Robo. A garden game like Viva Pinata and no less addictive.

PS3:
I recommend you buy an Xbox ;)

PC:
The Path (via Steam), if you like being unsettled, weirded out and enjoy less obvious plots.
Dwarf Fortress. More addictive than anything else including cigarettes, heroin and... ****ing breathing. One of those games I will play for the rest of my life. PLAY already you bastards I want a succession game with you horrible lot.

Dwarf Fortress: What is the game that lets you kill goblins and actually make totems from their skulls and jackets from their hides? Dwarf Fortress, Dwarf Fortress!

What game lets you re-route a river of magma in order to have it spill onto the army that's besieging your fortress? Dwarf Fortress, Dwarf Fortress!

What game usually ends in disaster with rooms filling up in a flood of muddy water from an irrigation project gone wrong, resulting in dead dwarves, babies and livestock and general mayhem and upheaval?

I've spent a lot of time playing PHUN.
It's not really a game, but more of a really simple creation tool. Think LittleBigPlanet meets MS Paint. It can even be used to create simple games. It was on the April 2008 NAG DVD, but there is a much more updated version available for free download at www.phunland.com.
Once you've downloaded it, make sure to visit the Phunbox, on the same website, where you can download other people's creations. There are some really awesome ones there.

How about a reason why, H2O? This is not sarcasm, this is me inviting you to elaborate why a person should choose this game over every other game out there.

Anywhoo, Now that is is out on the PC and I have completed it (Cleric must be ****ing in his pants with the amount of evangelizing I am doing for this game)..

Braid: A puzzle platformer that requires time manipulation. There are no 'cheap' tricks or diabolical puzzles (like Chip's Challenge). All that is required is a bit of brain power and some lateral thinking. The final level is pure genius in terms of execution and the end sequence left me with my jaw open.

The puzzle's themselves range from dead simple to perfect timing. There is no punishment for dying (just reverse time), no score deduction if you 'die', no restarting of entire levels because you f**ked up one small thing. Each puzzle piece that you collect can be dealt with separately and if you are too gatvol of a level, you can just go through the door and do it later.

And before I forget it in the mists of time:
Space Rangers 2: It is exceedingly hard to classify what this game is so I will go by what it is similar to. Think Freelancer, top down - you can be a pirate, merchant, bounty hunter, soldier etc. The ultimate goal is to rid the galaxy of the Dominators, a race of sentient robots. Regardless of your actions, the Dominators will continue to invade the galaxy and the people in the galaxy will continue to fight them off.

You can buy weapons, ships, ship parts and goods to trade to upgrade your ship and either give you more speed or a better edge against the pirates and your enemies.

What makes this game unique are the other aspects of this game. Apart from the Freelancer/Privateer/Elite primary gameplay there are other types of games you play, each no less poor quality. When you go through a wormhole you fight Dominator ships in a Arcade like shooter. When you attempt to free a planet from the Dominators you play a Real Time Strategy where you need to hold control points. When you are arrested (or other certain side quests) you play a text based adventure game.

I still cannot believe I bought this game for R100 in the bargain bin at CNA so many years ago

Yes, it is a brilliant game, but you forgot it comes with Space Rangers 1 included as well ;)

The text based adventures were my favourite but at one point I took to hunting down the other Rangers, by tracking where they were in the galaxy.
Oooh, I lied, my favourite part has to be the 'Call-to-Arms' where you get a news update, for Rangers to help the military free a system and then you basically end up to a huge Space Battle, where more often, than not, the military&Rangers loose and you have to run like hell! XD

Oh man, I'm going to play it again now...

What are you looking for? Fallout 3 has more replay value, but Dead Space is better in the thrills department.

I would recommend Deadspace over FO3 20x over, but that's because I really just don't get the FO. I know so many people who swear FO3 is the greatest thing since chocolate, but I found Deadspace so much better. Engrossing, rich, wonderful atmosphere, interesting combat mechanics, excellent zeo-grav sections, and the best sound I've ever heard in a game.

I must get Dead Space, people are singing its praises and I overlooked it.

Dead space is an ace game, except for the fact that you can only finish it twice and then it becomes boring ( only a little bit)

Why?

Give us reasons for why we should play these games?

What makes FEAR 2 more special than all the other FPS' out there?
Why is Dead Space better than say Doom 3
Why is Left 4 Dead the preferred multiplayer game, in your opinion, when I still see people eagerly playing Worms?

I'm looking for a FPS on 360.

I missed most of the big releases recently, was thinking about Far Cry 2, but I'm undecided. What do you recommend? Preferably something with a good single player campaign.

Feel free to add good budget titles! ;)

Bioshock 1st and foremost, followed by COD4.

Bioshock is the last FPS I bought... Is COD4 on Budget yet?

If it's the one one the PS1, with the kid who has to save his dog... I have it, although I don't have a PS1 atm I still play it every now and then on an emulator. You should check for ::cough:: iso downloads ::cough::

I recommend Mirror's Edge for those who didn't buy it yet, it's a really fun and fast paced game. You really need to think fast, and the colors are nice too. Furthermore what seperates it from other FPgames is that the focus isn't on killing an army of enemies, but rather avoiding them. It's also the fourth game I EVER completed without using cheats/trainers, there were some really tough times though. :)

Ok, seriously guys, stop just blurting out names and give REASONS for WHY people should play these games.

I want to know WHY if I suddenly have money that I should look for Bioshock over every other FPS on the market (ok, this rhetorical for me since I bought that game, Collectors edition, on release)

Crysis: The visuals will blow you away.
Warhead: Pretty much the same reason
Far Cry 2: takes a while to get into but its fun unlocking weapons (there are soooo many) the game world is HUGE and nice graphics.
Mirrors Edge: Fun/different game,,has nice physx, nice graphics, decent story
Stalker CS: Very very long game, play it with your head phones on loud at night all by yourself while wondering the zone any you may kack yourself.
