The LAN tickets will go on sale 1st August. Yes the red plugs will be needed once again and they are very easy to find. We bought from Incredible in Northgate last year. If you are concerned about it go get yours now.

It just helps to try prevent non pc items from being plugged into the power grid. The organizers have to budget on how much power is needed for the event and by using the red plugs they try control what gets plugged in.

I can assure you we will all really be impressed if some smuck plugs in his hot blanket and brings down the power at the event. So get over the complaints (they are old) and just get a red plug.

Last year every plug needed a red plug (I was there)

There are some stupid "date" mistakes! They should have taken down the site and made a full sweep of correct updates before putting it up again.

UPS plugs are differentiated from normal plugs by the earth pin having a flat side compared to a round one of a normal plug. This means that you can only insert the UPS plug into the socket as a round pin wont fit. There is otherwise no difference. You can have your normal plug with round earth pin shaved with a grinder to look like a UPS plug and and it will work.

I think that is just wishful thinking on someone's part. I have no inside info but just looking at how rAge has got bigger and better each year, why would they move it to CT and have to start all over again.

Dual events sounds much more plausible. Would cut down on the okes from ct coming to the jhb lan. The tickets will last longer than 6days.

I seriously doubt publishers and devs would like two events though.

I would like to make a recommendation. A pipe should be available whereby players can purchase cap to have Internet access for their IP address/and/or UID and pwd. They can buy it via credit card on an intranet portal. Someone like Telkom can sponsor it for the weekend, although it wont be real sponsoring as players can buy the cap (unless subsidised). We wanted to host a BF2142 server 1.50 last year but could not get it going as it needs Internet access. The perimiter can be protected via high speed/high volume firewall (http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps6120/index.html) and Ironport (http://www.ironport.com/) or equivalent.

As for the Red Plugs they will be available at rAge. As and when exhibitors let me know that they will be stocking them I will add there name here.

So far Titan Ice Computers have confirmed that they will be selling the red plugs at the show.

Not that I know of. All the times I have been at rAge I have always seen some young child play. Mostly they are 10. Very few of them and its better that way.

Half of the exhibits are actually stores where you can buy almost anything form hardware to games and usaully everything is on sale.

I saw a guy last year with his +/- 8 year old kid, they had this trolley for both their PCs, screens and sleeping gear. It was cool. I wouldn't mind going with my son one day, ASA his mom will allow him to play fps games. Just be warned: there are some guys who swear allot, especially the bad losers.

If it's better than your PC then bring it, just make sure not to ever leave it unattended obviously.

I sincerely doubt you will be shunned or laughed at. A lappie that can play CoD4 or TF2 is pretty sweet. I'd much prefer a semi-gaming laptop than lugging my heavy tower and 22" LCD around to LAN's.

It sux when you're busy copying and you recieve the copy error message and you wonder why and when you look at your harddrive space left and it is less than 50 mb

Hiya, its good to be back for my 5th year.
The previous years everyone had 2 power outlets, one for your screen and one for your PC. Most of the time people only use only one because the red plugs give you 2 to 3 connections power support. For the plugs themselves they only support the top flattened earth pins, so i guess you can say they are half block and half round (for my dear friend r3v07v3r). Its just like an normal round plug with a flatland earth pin. UPSes are not allowed. Plain power and PC's will be tested for power usage at the entrance.

But me and about 20 friends were discussing rage and i have to say, it needs more zazz..
all the rage events we have been to "all of them" where predictable.. i never see anything new...
last year everything i saw was the same there was no Zazz.. except that guy that broke my nose for a poster.
That realy destroyed my day. as i had to walk around with a blood splattered shirt and two tissues shoved up my nose.

Also the Rage lan was full of pirates and leechers.

If you get a lan ticket then that gets you into the expo as well. Otherwise you can buy just an expo ticket, I think it will cost around R50

The wait shortens daily, yet the end never seems closer.
Awaiting rAge is probabley what keeps us all going at times. lols.
Been there last year and will probably go to every rAge that is yet to happen.

I just perhaps wanted to confirm one thing >
I will be bringing my wife up to JHB ( from EL ) and we gonna make a long weekend about it.
How will we be affected by means of ticket requirements for her to come into the LAN area with me?
Without, of course, actually needing a plug for a PC as she won't be lanning at all.

Any feedback on this will be appreciated.

Secondly to who ever can help me I have just bought myself a ASUS GTX 295 and thought my 500W psu would supply its power appetite. I was wrong if anyone can tell me where I can get a 650W~750W psu for a reasonable price please.

About the passes, talk to ShadowOrphan or one of the admins. They will be able to tell u exactly what u need to do. The games that everyone is asking about, i would say rather try to assemble ur own competition to be shure that there would be one. If you have a clan there will be a few helping hands and there are a few companies willling to sponsor some things if you sell their name a bit in your competitions. Just talk with the admins to make sure that it would be allright with them :)

The main reason why they don’t allow people to sleep in the dome is because it is unsightly for the people from the expo. Sometimes it can look like a homeless stand if everyone sleeps in front of the expo area :D. But if you have friends or have moved to pta (like me) or j'burg it’s much softer and nicer to go home for a few hours to get some sleep. Other options are to take a quick nap in your car u came with (not very comfortable)

Yeah, last time a couple of my mates and I stayed over the weekend, if we needed sleep we just slept in our chairs. It's more comfortable than it sounds.

As for sleeping in a car, it's okay, but only if you put down the back seats and slide a thin mattress under the boot. That's what we had to resort to for a two night camp when we forgot the cover for the tent. xD

Well found some great stretchers at this camping store. Realy high quality for R240. That will solve the sleeping problem this year. Also, last year we took those small fishing chairs.. Works great as a foot stool.. But this year I am taking a cup, I hate drinking coffee out of those white cupy thingies..

And then we I can host more of the older type games. Like Red Alert 2 and Tiberium Wars. We just use it as a Dedicated server at our Lans. But the Other thing is, its so damb big. And Its hard to carry. I was just curious to know if its allowed or not.

Lasttime we saw spectators and they said they could only enter and leave with the person that they with ie with the arm band. A ticket is a ticket. if you buy 2 tickets , you buy 2 Seats , 1 table , 4 plugs.

But me and about 20 friends were discussing rage and i have to say, it needs more zazz..
all the rage events we have been to "all of them" where predictable.. i never see anything new...
last year everything i saw was the same there was no Zazz.. except that guy that broke my nose for a poster.
That realy destroyed my day. as i had to walk around with a blood splattered shirt and two tissues shoved up my nose.

The anime works stand wasnt there.. and i can tell you that stand was busy when it was there.
Also the Rage lan was full of pirates and leechers.

But seriosly.. i think you guys can do so much more and make it so much better.
I'm really not trying to start a fight, please understand

Uhm, don't know if your power connector to your screen is the same as mine. It looks like a laptops power connector, with 3 smaller cylindrical (sory for spelling)?

IF so, then ya. My local Matrix shop ordered them for me. If you don't mind waiting a week, they can even get you 1 plug with a normal connector and that connector on one plug.. Its like some1 knew I will be wanting one of those.. ^_^

Ok a few things:

Before i start my rant and rave... Please post a locked thread with ALL the info about the Lan. eg. plugs, sleeping, spectating friends etc etc...

Ok so here are my Issues with RAGE!!!
I was at RAGE last year and felt that it was a big let down. Im a regular "Lanner" and felt that the network was EXTREMLY laggy. I mainly play DotA, and the amount of lag and dropping, I would rather play DotA at home on my 4meg ADSL line, as its MUCH faster!! my 8ping on dsl to the local b.net server is much faster than the response times i was getting at the lan.

I saw that there were 16port 10/100 desktop swithes with no gigabit uplink, so if you take the 15 available ports for people to use, and the 1 uplink port. The 15 people need to all run through the one 10/100 port, and if all the people are downloading, its no supprise that my DotA was very laggy. 15 people divided by 10MEGS is simply not enough bandwidth.

Is this going to be resolved this lan?

Are we going to see a decent network layout like other large lans in JHB, that are already using FIBRE backbone, not to mention gigabit network ports for everyone?

D-Link sponsoring old technology 10/100 network switches is a complete waste of time.

For my R250 im spending to get in, I WANT GIGABIT NETWORK with a DECENT BACKBONE on EACH SWITCH!!!!

Im sure with NAG as the host of this lan, and this lan trying to be the MOST premier LAN, they will try and be BETTER than the other lans around them.

This isnt only about hosting a "bigger" lan, but also hosting a "Better" lan.

You are allowed to stay there the whole weekend , however , your PC may not leave the building between 22:00 and 08:00 if i remember correctly.

I have looked through the forum and have not seen anything about external hardrives. As I have read you are not allowed a multiplug. So what do laptop owners do who have limited space and use externals to house their backups?? My laptop will use allot less power than the behemoth towers some people have. u can't change the plugs for the externals obviously.

When I selected my HDD for my laptop it was the biggest in the 7200 rpm range. USB powered HDD are expensive and not very big, they also dont provide firewire or esata ports. one does not always want bigger since HDD in a laptop, u want speed. as it is a primium in a laptop u get what u can. In desktop world HDD are pretty fast and dont cost that much. will wait for the 500gb solid state to become cheaper and i will put two of those in. until then i can use the other plug meant for my screen for my external.

Throw up some people barriers or something. Get a proper queue environment going. The doors open and all of a sudden it's a free for all, nothing resembling order in sight.

Valid point. I normally orchestrate the chaos inside so I am not really up to date on this aspect. I will look into a solution.

I went to a builders warehouse last year and just bought 5 plugs ... replaced my black plugs with the red ones (cut them off :) ) .. else if you don't want to cut it .. u can try incredible connection .. or just buy another power plug cable that goed into the laptop adapter .. and cut that plug off and put on the red one yourself.

Whether you use a laptop or a PC does not make a difference. You do not need a new cable, just the correct plug. Thus if you buy the correct dedicated plug you fit it in place of your existing plug. The plug should be R10 at most at any decent electrical supplier or similar outlet.

Yes you can buy the daisy chain cords with the correct plug at most PC shops.

As far as to why, two main reasons. Firstly I crave for the continuous interaction with pixilated screens to explain what has been covered more than once and most recently in the FAQ section. Secondly as some almost famous person said a very long time ago ?Because I said so?

Or you may accept the more common explanation because it is a requirement to comply with legislature.

Dual screens are not allowed because of space and power. Since you are running from your laptop, if you only use the screen and not run both then I assume that it will be fine.

Okay will it be acceptable if my screen uses the same power as my laptop? The main screen will be positioned over my laptop so that it will not use more space than a normal desktop pc. I doubt that this setup will consume more electricity than any other desktop pc.

Then your friend probably forced his plug in , which in a fools world , works , but in most cases ive seen , it breaks the multi-plug either when you take it out , or smash it in.

During 2006 there were some normal plugs here and there, so you might of been lucky. But get the red plug just to be safe.

Not sure if my first response was unclear. I was trying to say that yes you may use the other screen as long as you make that screen the only output active and obviously position it in such a way that they are not next to each other (normal dual screen setup). I mentioned the power to ensure that people realize that they cannot bring 2,3 or 4 screens to plug in and run a surround system. Since you can output only to the monitor it will effectively deactivate the laptop screen (goes off) in which case it means you are back to a normal PC/monitor setup, with your laptop being a very thin PC.

Hopefully that resolves your doubts.

Correct. That was the last year that we were still busy moving over to the dedicated plugs. If I recall that would have been upstairs. There are now only dedicated multiplugs.

Unfortunately we have had ‘insert less positive word here’ that did exactly that. And you are correct in saying that it damages the multiplugs. So they ended up in having to pay for the damage. Since the cost of these plugs are currently in the region of R150 each, I suggest you respect my equipment and ensure that you do not cause a possible power failure or injury to yourselves. Destruction of property is a legally punishable offense.

Well ive seen what happens when you force a normal plug into those plugs.. Had a buddy who did that at a other Lan, tripped the whole one side. Emidiatly we all yelled he name in the darkness.. He spent the whole lan outside in his car...

Hell yes RAGE is approaching and I'll be sitting at my PC spam refreshing the Computicket page to buy them as they go on sale. 12:01 right? Or do they only go on sale tomorrow morning?

Anyway, does anyone know if there's somewhere I can buy a cable for a Lacie external that allows me to attach a red plug instead of the 2 pin? I have most of my stuff on my external and know it's not possible nor allowed for me to use an adapter. I only use one plug for my PC, and I've seen it around that I can ask for permission to use the second plug for an external, here's me asking for that permission.

If it's CoD5 you're wanting to play at rAge then the NAG LAN will be the best place for your clan to go. We dont have confirmation at this point of any official CoD5 comps running in the NAG LAN, but there are sure to be some community-organised ones that will take place during the course of the weekend.

Telkom and AGASA will be hosting three competitive Do Gaming League events at rAge (CoD4, CSS and Battlefield 2). These competitions will take place in a completely seperate area to the NAG LAN - the Do Gaming VIP area is located underneath The Dome in the old casino area. Tickets for access to this area are only available through qualification in the Do Gaming League. The Do Gaming VIP area will accommodate 500 gamers, and they will be networked to the NAG LAN meaning that in total there will be 2,300 gamers playing on the same network at rAge this year. None is planned specifically. We are busy looking at hosting COD4 and DOTA in the Open LAN. Do not ask for details since we are still bus with the details and I do not commit until I am sure.

Reselling Computicket-issued tickets is in violation of their Terms and Conditions of Sale. See reverse of the ticket for details. In the meantime, you're out of here, I suspect.
