A bit slower than GTX 285
Guys from Gamestar.de site managed to get their hands on the Radeon HD 4890 card without signing an NDA, and decided to publish a review of it. The card should officially be announced tomorrow, April 2nd.
According to game tests done at Gamestar.de, the Radeon HD 4890 sometimes manages to pull ahead of the GTX 285, but only in some games and at certain resolutions. The sample used in the review easily reached 1,000MHz for the core and and 1,190 for memory, but this might be an isolated case, as we are not sure that every card could reach those clocks. Gamestar.de did note that, when overclocked, the fan gets quite noisy.
In any case, everything should be crystal clear tomorrow, when GTX 275 reviews go live and when we see a head to head battle between these two cards.
You can find the review here (http://www.gamestar.de/hardware/tests/grafikkarten/pcie/1955014/test_radeon_hd_4890.html).

How the hell did they get their hands on a sample card before the launch?
Oh well it will probably be much more affordable.

Well, like, we have a sample 4890 - have had for about a week now. Special perks of being in da biz, you know?

No.
I just noticed the 4890 in the Guru3d article uses two 6pin connectors and not one8pin and one6pin like was expected.

The www.hardocp.com (http://enthusiast.hardocp.com/article.html?art=MTYzNiwxLCxoZW50aHVzaWFzdA==) review is up. They compare the HD4890 to the GTX280, GTX275 and the HD4870.

The MSRP is set for $269. So it'll be priced more or less at where the GTX260 used to be.
Also, I just realised that the South-African prices for mid to high end graphics cards are crazy. R4642 for a $270 card?!

I didn't expect the extra performance DX10.1 gave over DX10 in HAWX.

I like the "Overclocking on the Fly" part. Underclock it in desktop mode, overclock it to user specs when playing games and such: sounds like pure win to me. ATi just keeps getting better and better. Looking back at their pitiful past, who can say they'd be industry leaders now?

Yeah that is S.A...
Prices are high, hopefully the price of the 4870 will come a bit down with the release of the 4890.

The 4870 512mb freezer card is already R2600. How much cheaper do you want it?

That is a good price for that card, but I consider that more of a realistic price than an absolute bargain (it is a ~$200 card).
Like I commented earlier, lately the price for graphics cards in SA is a bit out of touch.
Take the GTS250 for example which is a ~$150 card trading locally for R2500-R3200.

It's not all doom and gloom.

Should retail at €210 in Europe
According to our information, AMD has decided to drop the HD 4890 price down to €210 as of today. Most of the cards are still listed at €220+ but some retailers/e-tailers already dropped the price.
AMD has decided to slightly adjust the price probably due to the fact that HD 4890 is indeed a bit slower than Nvidia's GTX 275, so according to our sources, AMD has given a green light to sell these cards at around €210 in Europe. Most of the cards are currently listed at €220+ but some cards as Powercolor's Radeon HD 4890 are already available at €214,99 at Austrian Peluga.at. For example, the HIS Radeon HD 4890 is listed at €209.94 at German MIX-Computer.
The cheapest HD 4890 on the market comes from Sapphire of course, and this one is currently selling for €209,89. Sapphire is also the cheapest one if you are looking for an overclocked HD 4890 but it is still not available in Europe. As soon as other retailers/e-tailers adjust the price accordingly we might see even lower prices. If Nvidia decides to drop the GTX 275 price we might have a new price war on our hands.
You can check out the full list here. (http://buy.fudzilla.com/eu/?cat=gra16_512;asuch=HD%204890&sort=p).

Stupid question! Ofcourse I want it cheaper than that, everyone does. The thing is that you cant get it cheaper. So yeah I will pay R 2600.
