View Full Version : Childhood Movies To See Again?

Which childhood movies (if any) would you like to watch again (or re-experience as if new?)

As stupid as it may sound to some, I've just been thinking how I'd like to see Disney's "Aladdin" again.

Everyone mentions Nausjica of the Wind, did it show locally at some point? Secret of Nimth was scary for me as a kid, just like Watership Down freaked me out.

I watched Aladin so many times it's not even funny anymore (funny enough I just started Agrabar in Kingdom Hearts), I'd love to see that as if new.

A movie I saw once as a kid I want to see again is the Bravestar movie/finale.

Personally I'd be a bit wary of re-watching childhood films, in case they don't live up to your memories.

But on the flipside nostalgia can be great, and you may notice stuff you didn't before.

Or understand the plot.....I remember not really 'getting' half the stuff I watched

The scene where the Genie appears is still firmly rooted in my memory. Robbin Williams did an awesome job.

I've got both the Transformer and Bravestarr movies. :P They're both still fun to watch. I'd like to watch this again:

I've got the Secret of Nimh on videotape, going to try convert it to dvd with my dad's recording system. Absolutely awesome movie.

High on my list of movies to watch is Bravestar, Aladdin (got that), the Land Before Time (lost it, sadly), and I'd like to re-watch the entire Digimon and Dragonball series again.

Saw it at Look and Listen last year for about R230 :( Bought mine secondhand in good condition for R120.

Haven't watched it yet because it's something I would like to invite a few people over and watch together, great getting a group together and watch old movies we used to enjoy when we were a bit younger. Watched Alien, Aliens, Top Secret and Darkman a while ago with some friends.

^I was just so facinated by it when I was young, It dealt with war and survival and I don't know about you but I liked violence when I was a kid. Strangely enough I can't really remember ever being traumatised by it, and the music used in it was brilliant for the time.

Now that I come to think of it, I saw Nausicaa only once as a young chap. It was called Warriors of the Wind then and I watched it on Betamax (remember those?).

Other films I've seen as a youngster that I wouldn't mind watching again: The Princess Bride. Also The Survivors, which was a Robin Williams movie in the 80s featuring heavy satire (you know, when Williams was still funny).

Another film I'd like to revisit is Repo Man. A weird and crazy movie that made little sense to me at the time and was most probably not meant for children. I loved it! (It had an awesome mostly-punk soundtrack.)

I always found it hilarious that something would shoot them and they'd all fall down spinning. Every. Single.Time.The.Exact.Same.Way.

Then they'd beat the monster, something would throw it with some device and it would grow enormous. Then they would summon their cars/steeds/or whatever happened to be their rides to fight it again.

These aren't movies, but I'd REALLY like to see both afrikaans series again, called "Moemin" and the friggin original afrikaans "Pinnochio". I watched an episode of that afrikaans Pinnochio the other day again (it showed on some wierd channel on DVTS or whatever it's called) and it was completely EPIC! It was much more emotional that I remembered from all those years back, I used to watch an episode everyday at my grandparents house (my grandfather had a really good TV/VHS combo). Loved it.

But also, Moemin... "Ken julle dalk die Moe-vallei? Weet julle dalk wie daar sal bly? 'n Vriend soos min en 'n held daarby, dit is Moemin! Liewe lawwe Moemin!" OMW still remember it!

EDIT: Ooh, ooh, just thought of this:

I wish I knew why.

It's 'cos of the 'Laaaazy Eye'... or it could be that it was a great story, which is to say I watched it a couple years ago and it has aged fairly well.

As for the my own childhood film I was going to say Kickboxer with good ol' JCVD however I bought it recently... Let's just say it has aged badly and leave it at that. I don't even want to try Total Recall after that experience.

The other side of the coin is that I recently bought Tiny Toons, Freakazoid, Animaniacs and Tale Spin and I am so glad I was a child in the '90s. Them cartoons be good, Cartoon Network can take a hike, Spielberg knew what cartoons were supposed to be about. Another one I am keen to revisit is Pink Panther the original little cartoon shorts... oh and Inspector Gadget.

Fievel is one of the few examples in animation where the sequel was oh so much better than the first.

And "the laaaaaaaazy eye" sticks with me to this day. Totally gonna try hunt this down now.

I know it's been mentioned, but everyone should rewatch The Neverending Story from time to time. There is a certain melancholy in the film that was completely lost on me as a child. "They used to be good, strong hands" had so much more meaning when I rewatched it recently.
Besides,and who wasn't terrified of:

Well, either a new thread on the same topic would have been created or someone "necro'd" this. It can still be relevant, now. Not everyone was around back then, either. I don't see the problem (http://porady.zdrowo.info.pl/zmarszczki.html). There is a marked difference between replying to a debate from yesteryear than carrying on an old broad - and still relevant - topic, imo.

Apart from the mainstream movies already given, Thomas the Tank Engine and Ivor (the Tank Engine) were also favourites of my childhood. I think I had a fetish for trains when I was younger. >__<

Yeah, I think Kharrak already covered it, but thanks for the re-clarification.

I watched Beethoven recently and it wasn't as appealing as when I watched it as a child. It was still rather entertaining though.

Next on the list is getting hold of the Ghostbusters movies and if I can find it, Homeward Bound.

How am I going to introduce my kids, to one of the greatest movie series of all time?

Ah, but if you look at the topic, it states childhood movies, not children's movies.

On that note, I just thought about this the other day, I'd love to see American Werewolf in London again. "But that's not a children's film!" you say. And you're right. It scared the bejeezus out of me. It was awesome.

On this note, you'll actually find that a lot of childrens' films in the 1980s had dark themes in them, something which is sadly missing from childrens' films these days. People have become so overprotective of kids that they no longer feel it's acceptable to have scary stuff in films for them, even though most kids actually do love a scare (within limits, of course). Films in the 80s had a gritty edge that's really missing from films these days - kids' films today are overly saccharine and teach children nothing about real life, instead portraying life as something perfect where you always end up easily getting your own way.

That is very true, it's if people have become to conservative in a way. Look at The Black Cauldron as an example, the villians smoke, when last have you seen that in a childrens movie. Disney/Pixar has taken over, not that they make bad movies. It's just not the same.

@ Onona, Agreed. Even 101 Dalmatians was about a ****ing crazy old bitch who had an obsession with fur and wanted to kill and skin puppies to wear them as a coat. That's pretty damn demented in my books.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit? had quite a bit of drinking, smoking, violence and even a dab of sexuality (even the detective got turned on by Jessica Rabbit). Come to think of it, that's another movie I'd like to watch again.

Fair enough. I guess that's a good argument for the Grimm Brother's stories as well, which I sometimes wonder whether they're just a bit too far on the side of creepy for children.

Well you have to remember that with the Grimm Brothers that they were from a very prescriptive time and the easiest way to control thought is through fear. The underlying themes within their tales although merely a reflection of the thoughts at the time did way more to encourage those same thoughts in later times.

I always find it so funny when I re-watch a 'classic' from my childhood and notice all these dark undertones; and immediately turning to whoever is next to me and saying, "How could they let children watch this?!". Even though at the time those undertones were not even remotely picked up, well, at least not consciously. I agree with onona that we just don't give enough credit to the naivety and resilience of children both physically and mentally.

Just realized I mostly watched these sort of movies as a kid, there are a few disney and other animated movies that stand out though, such as the Feivel movies, and Swan Princess (which I adored).

But mostly late 80's early 90's sci fi and action was what I seemed to like best.

Onona, about dark themes in kids movies, is one of the reasons I think Princess & the Frog is a step back in the right direction for Disney. The Villian has a sort of charm, but his shadow monsters will freak you out, etc. Plus you have a leading lady who always had it tough, yet worked hard even though her close friend seemed to have everything and her other friends kept telling her to relax.

You do not want to watch these movies.
You want to go home and rethink your life.
