The iPhone's really good, because it's cool and ****, but it's really expensive and there are other phones that match the quality, without the same price tag (http://www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net/c.cgi?u=iphone). Still it's really innovative and fun to use. I only have it, though, because it was given to me, I wouldn't choose it normally.
The omnia does look really cool.

My friend has the Samsung Omnia, he loves it, but hates the battery, last for 2 days then must be charged again. The manual also says that you cant leave the battery overnight to charge, it can only be charged till it is full, then you must unplug it, otherwise it can damage. Dont know if its true.

Its true for most batteries. I'm lazy, I plug my phone in before I sleep and in the morning I pluck it off the charger.And then I wonder what's happened to my battery life...

I have good news for your friend then, there is a ROM upgrade that came out about 2 months ago. Really useful as it extends the battery life by 100%, and changes some other things. You can find it here (http://www.samsungblog.co.za/blog/mobi/2009/02/samsung-omnia-i900-firmware-now-available-download).
Just remember it is a ROM update, so if something goes wrong, it may turn your friend's phone into a very expensive brick, and Samsung does not cover for it if things go wrong. I used it on mine. Things went wrong. It still works. :P

Bit of a disappointment at first, considering I got it like two months before the N79 came out and fixed all the niggly little problems, but with all of that out of the way I really dig it now. I've been a SE fan for ages but they just didn't have anything decent when it was time to upgrade.

I started out with a Nokia 3310, then moved on to a 3200. That ended up in the wash, and I got a crappy Motorola. The Motorola decided to stop charging at some point. Next I got a Samsung X660, which ended up in a class of water. I'm now using a Samsung X530.
I don't have the best luck with phones and don't need fancy features so they're all pretty basic.

Nokia in my eyes is the most reliable there is. I am not on contract :( but really want to upgrade aswell. The N73 recieved some good comments in this thread, think I must go for it, even if it is not the newest in the N-series.
HTC TyTn II, the so-called Kaiser platform. The Windows Mobile interface is clunky and irritating, but the functionality and versatility of the little thing is quite handy. Connectivity is brilliant as well - WiFi, HSDPA, 3G, etc.
It's now somewhat outdated and tends to be quite unreliable. The battery life is pretty short.

Same here.I filled virtually all of my cellphone's 90megs of shared memory with pics,vids,etc....Don't like the fact that I cannot use java apps to surf the net or check my gmail????I have to use the browser that comes with the cellphone to check my mail,etc..... :@
It is busy failing atm as sometimes the slider causes the cellphone's os\firmware to "crash" and I have to move the top part to the left and right until the screen goes back to normal.Thats what happens when you take hand me downs from people who do not care how they take care of their stuff.

Do NOT, I repeat, do NOT get a Nokia N70. Even if you get it for free, it has to be the worst phone in the world and is let down by stupid, irritating and niggling little problems that all ad up to become a real pain in the sphincter. For example, the keypad. Now I am not the biggest person in the world, in fact my fingers are relatively thin, but whenever I try to scroll down, say for instance, through my contacts, my finger hits the 2 key which automatically takes you to the top of the list. This is particularly irritating when you are going through your contacts beginning with "T". And to think that I "upgraded" from a Sony Erricsson K750i, which I may ad, was the best phone I ever had.

Here's a review. (http://www.gsmarena.com/nokia_5610_xpressmusic-review-199.php) Methinks its money well spent.
High-quality construction, steel highlights
3G support with video calls
2.2" TFT QVGA display
3 megapixel camera with autofocus
UMTS, EDGE, GPRS
Advanced music functions, radio with RDS
Stereo Bluetooth

I'm not disputing the fact that it's well made, in fact every time it's fallen apart it's clipped back together again pretty easily :P It's more just the functionality of it all. Another stupid design fault is that the key-guard de-activates if the camera cover opens. Extremely irritating when you only get x amount of airtime a month, only to learn it's been wasted on random calls.

I noticed that too... But over 2 years of using it I've developed the habit of always putting my phone in my pocket bottom downwards. As such the camera thing only flips open sometimes when I took it out. I even do it with my new phone.

Using Sony Ericsson's Update Service (http://www.sonyericsson.com/cws/support/phones/detailed/updateservices?cc=ZA&lc=en) to update the software and firmware apparently fixes the issues and even gives you extra performance. Regarding your issue though, just let the phone get completely used up before charging. In other words let it actually completely switch off before charging it. After a couple weeks it should be back to normal.
I have:
C902 Bond Edition. Absolutely brilliant phone.
N81. Have nothing bad to say about it.
E71. Awesome phone, only crit, the miniature sized buttons.
I would recommend all three phones but if I had to pick only one it would be the SE C902.

When I say moderate use I use it for about 8 hours in those 5 to 6 days with my D-900i and the rest of the time it is off.

I'm getting myself the E51 in a week or two. It's the only phone with wifi in my contract range sooo... *shrug* - but I've had it before on a previous contract and I was pretty happy with it.
Only this time I'm going for the silver instead of black. You know, for a change of pace. :|

Well, this will be different from my usual PC-part hunting ^_^ I have an unfortunate love for Nokia phones, let me warn you though. Sorry dude, but I don't know a lot about Samsung phones anymore, just the i900 Omnia. Lets see what I can find:
Nokia:
Nokia 5310 XpressMusic (http://www.vodacom.co.za/pcri.do?action=detail&phonemodelId=694&makeId=7&makeName=Nokia) @ R2050 from CaCell (http://www.jump.co.za/product/nokia-5310-9196856.htm)

LG:

LG KP500 Cookie (http://www.pricecheck.co.za/products/7550573/LG+KP500+Cookie+(UK%2C+Brown_Red)/) @ R1935 from eXpansys (http://www.pricecheck.co.za/offers/7550573/LG+KP500+Cookie+(UK%2C+Brown_Red)/)
LG KU990 Viewty (http://www.pricecheck.co.za/products/2043602/LG+KU990+Viewty/) @ R2510 from eXpansys
(http://www.pricecheck.co.za/offers/2043602/LG+KU990+Viewty/)
Its not the most expansive list I could make, but this was all researched in the space of 40min. For the money, and the features, I would go with the LG Viewty, simple because it looks like everything I ever wanted in a phone (read the review (http://www.gsmarena.com/lg_ku990_viewty-review-167p3.php)). Its a tie between the Nokia 5320 and the Viewty, and the Viewty gets my vote.

Well my brother bought one and the touch screen was realy crap he had to push a button like 3 times before it worked, it's got a pretty good camera but when we tried to transfer it to a pc it did not work, we phoned lg and they said they don't support vista while we made it clear that we tried to use it on a laptop with xp on it, and later vista but didn't work. So yea, rather go for the 5800 it's an excelent phone, nokia has done an awesome job with it. Aparently they are releasing new firmware for the iPhone soon, can't wait for that. Maybe we just had bad luck with that viewty but I have never been a fan of lg phones

I'd like to contest that. My mother had to replace her 5610 because of a slider failure, and on my recommendation got the 5320 instead. I think its the most responsive S60 phone I've ever used, its way quicker to do things than many other higher-priced Nokia Smartphones. And its bloody cheap, too.

End of last year I got myself a Nokia E51 on contract with MTN. R78pm = Phone + R100 airtime + 25sms + CLID
I really like it. Lots of nice functions which I've missed on previous phones ( I know other phones offer the same stuff) multi-taskign for one with a Symbian OS, it can open MS Office files, PDFs and ZIP files. Also handles my IMAP e-mail quite nicely.
Relatively small phone, fits nicely in pocket, battery life is pretty decent.
Only gripe is that it doesn't charge via the USB, although a plus is that it uses a mini USB cable for data.

The W995 also gets my vote, but mostly for the camera, the audio jack, the option to save messages to the included memory card, and the extremely impressive wireless internet options. Damn, as an internet modem that thing would fly. For personal taste, though, I wouldn't buy it, mainly because my heart belongs to a Cookie. Or perhaps I'm a touch-screen slut ;-)

Dude... Nag them for the N79 rather - you won't regret waiting for it. The N79 fixes all the niggly little things wrong with the N78 and it costs the same. It's also been out for months now so your SP should have it (or at least should be able to get it). I have an N78; wish I waited for the N79 rather.

I have not seen any contracts with the Pro or Elite consoles. All arcade. I got mine in this manner. However, those were the original XBox arcades, so no memory card & games. I own a Pro console as well, and the only downer about the arcade is that it does not come with the component cables. So if you are not HD ready, the arcade is still a brilliant console.

ATM, I have a Nokia 6234, which I had bought with my first salary way back in 2007...it is still with me but it is dying from various causes, for eg. when I was working on the roads with the reaction wardens I used it as a weapon by chucking it at a suspect like a brick. I'll always enjoy the keypad as it is responsive and my main phone in terms of mxit and opera mini, I like the character support and it's functionality and very LOUD stereo speakers.
I also have a Samsung M3200 BEATBOX-Edition, it is a brilliant phone with minor gripes, like the texting (I'm used to my Nokia 6234 in that way to be able to get all the symbols on every button without having to firstly going into sub-menu's then scrolling and then selecting the symbol you need and then you find the symbol to be on the end of what you have typed when you had been trying to use an apostrophe to show ommision) or the music manager on the phone tends to select completely different tracks and adds them to the playlist instead of your wanted tracks, it only adds the correct ones' if you select them by artist copy the whole set of that artist over and then individually delete those that you don't want/ you add each track individually to the playlist. The speakers you get is pure win...I like to plug in my Genius 2.1 PC Speakers into the 3.5 mm headphone jack and then the speakers you get with the phone into it's mini-usb port, and then I irk the Vuvuzela-Squadron that lives behind me...it also takes decent pics.

Samsung S5230 Star review: Hot starlet (http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_s5230_star-review-372.php)
I usually find that GSM Arena have very informative reviews and stats pages, much more so than magazines or other websites. I personally don't like the design of the E63 or any phone that emulates the Blackberry's style, because I can't get my head around the mini-keyboard in front of me. The Star is a phone I would actually like, but the LG Cookie is much better.

I'm also eager to give Android a try, but the HTC Magic, which comes with the newest version of Android, doesn't support Bluetooth, a big minus in my opinion since I use Bluetooth a lot to transfer stuff between my laptop and phone. I'd still get it in a heartbeat if it could run Pidgin with the MXit plugin and if it was within my price range.
HTC Magic review: Practical magic (http://www.gsmarena.com/htc_magic-review-377.php)
At least Android is a fully-functional operating system that isn't tied to any one service provider *cough* Apple iPhone *cough*. And its open-source, which means we could expect special-editions to come from different manufacturers, and built-in compatibility with Linux.

My brother has the Samsung Star, its basicly the same as the Jet, just a bit fancier :p 5.1 surround sound on a phone... im sorry i dont see the point. It does seem to be a cool phone tho, the Star is really easy to use, as im sure the Jet would be too. Did u check the comparisons between the Jet and 5800 on GSMARENA? The Nokia has a Symbian OS which is cool, but other than that it seems to be lacking against the Samsung.
Oh and im still using a Sony W900i, switchblade phone ;D

I just upgraded to the Nokia 6710 Navigator. I LOVE the GPS, but the one thing is that the zooming bar beneath the screen can be super sensitive, making the maps/photos/internet zoom in and out randomly sometimes, but other than that, I adore this little piece of technology...

Fantastic phone, that 6710 Navigator. Despite being a "GPS phone" (like, what isn't these days?), it kicks ass in its segment thanks to that beefy CPU that's needed to run the GPS smoothly.
Oh, hey why not: On topic, I'm playing with a Nokia N900 at the moment. It's pretty much the best thing in the world. Basic specs to almost (by a hair) match the iPhone, physical keyboard with slide design, 5MP camera, and a completely open Debian Linux OS that lets you do whatever the hell you want with it. It's like the Nokia Internet Tablet concept, N97 and iPhone got drunk one night and somehow spawned this little fellow.

I've got a Nokia N81. I'm pretty happy with it. I got it last year and it's held up well. The only problems are a crack on the gaming button(which, BTW, I've seen on 3 or 4 other N81s) and the cover for one of the speakers fell off. TodayI tried using my brother's sony x1 and it was underwhelming. The only thing I could do was surf the net...which I do on my Nokia(he had teh same complaint, that's why he went back to his W850i). The phone I'd really like to have is the N97, it looks really interesing, but on my Top up 135 contract, the likelyhood of that happening is so low I've got a better chance of winning the lotto...and I'm underage.

I know, in fact, I'm so new to GPS that I use it almost everywhere I go, even though I know where I'm going, just for the fun it. :D
Did I mention that if you tilt it to the side, the screen changes from horizontal to vertical? Yeah, I love it...

Both the N97 and N900 are amazing pieces of gadgetry. I'd love to own the N900 myself, but something like that's not going to happen in a while - I have more chance of losing my virginity and of getting a 12" Ion netbook, which would work better for me.
On the topic of the 6710 Navigator, I recently upgraded from my now-dead Nokia 3110 Classic, which was an awesome budget phone, to the Samsung i450V. Its basically a vanilla Navigator without a GPS, less memory and a slightly slower CPU, but a much better keyboard and dedicated music keys hidden away at the top. Its more like the N81 or N82 in a sense. My next phone will definitely be an N900, even if I have to buy it second-hand.

I got the SE Satio last weekend. It's got some really cool features apart from it's relatively small memory which I have filled already (it only has an 8Gb memory card, compared to 16Gb and 32Gb of similar phones). I'm loving it so far but I haven't found any decent apps or games for it. But it's still a major upgrade from my W850i - Don't know why I ever took that phone!

What would you like to know?I love the the 24bit colour display which will make all my wallpapers look awesome.I can't wait to try out the ability to change the colour of the touch screens.I like the blend of old school technology with the portrait slider plus the keys and the touchscreen navigation.The surfing the net appears to be quite fast as I installed the gmail app quite quick so when I get it eventually I can access my gmail account without having to surf the net using opera mini browser on my D-900i...Unfortunately I haven't been able to try out the themes though.I haven't been able to try the video player,radio nor the music player that comes with the phone.

I just came across this news:
ARM: Quad-Core 2.5 GHz Cortex A-15 (http://phandroid.com/2010/09/09/arm-quad-core-2-5-ghz-cortex-a-15-is-definitely-happening/?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter) coming in 2012!
Ok, consider my mind blown. ARM – the same folks behind the Cortex A-8 processors we enjoy in many chipsets today – has announced that they’ll be bringing out a 2.5GHz quad-core Cortex A-15 processor
That is the processor that will be powering our smartphones and other mobile devices in less than two years.
It's insane, and as the author of the article said, it might be overkill, but it is still very exciting news.
Having that sort of processing power while on the go(if you can keep it powered) might even make things like that Augmented Reality video that Miktar posted possible :-P

It's more that, I've just not had a use for it really - my lifestyle no longer requires it. That, and I've grown very tired of the cellphone market, it's like the videocard market in the early 2000s: rampant useless iterative upgrades and OS-wars that generally don't mean squat to the average user.

lol, that was the first question that came to mind. Internet connectivity is great, but it as the only way to communicate must have its challenges.
Im getting my iPhone 4 on wednesday, cant wait... although, going to a Microsoft conference where they will be showing off their new mobile 7 OS in two weeks, so yea, erm, lets just say I hope i stay happy with my choice.
The big reason why i stick with apple is because of quality and the simplicity. Infact, I hated the addition of multi-tasking as till this very day I find it useless and its sole purpose on a phone is to hog resources…
I use my phones for:
a) Making and receiving calls and sms’s.
b) Browsing the internet when im bored in meetings or stuck in traffic
c) eMail (mostly just receiving as sending still has its challenges)
d) Games
Apple gives me this with exceptional quality. I just hope they don’t lose the plot with future iOS releases trying to add fancy features which ads more management overhead as appose to value (multi-tasking again…)
With the introduction of the iPad my phones value dropped, reason being, if im mobile (without a laptop) i use my ipad for b, c and d...

Went to sun city for the weekend (no, not for skouspel, for everything else the place had to offer). Anywayz, what amazed me is the quality of photos that I took with the iphone 4. Its only a 5 megapixel camera but the colours, detail, etc, in the photos are fantastic. HDR is also amazing (with some limitations thats easy to get around). Great great device.
I have tried to replicate the reception problem several times without ANY success. One of my mates said it had something to do with the something that South African cellphone towers work on, so not sure. But yea, touching that "bad spot" has no effect on my phone...

From what I hear, the problem with the iPhone 4 reception was most notable in the US on AT&T networks. I think the major problems lie with the network itself and it's ****ty quality than the phone itself, since countless people I have spoken to with the phone have tried to recreate the problem with no success.

Agreed, two of my mates recieved their iphone 4s today and again, could not re-create the issue. The funny thing is we tested a Nokia and actually had success in re-creating the problem on some nokia phone "not sure which model, wasnt too interested".
Oooi, what a long day.
Personally the next generation iPads are something im really really looking forward to. The retina display is something out of this world. The viewing angle alone is something no other mobile device can claim to have. Sure they will pick up onto the tech soon though.

Also on the loose today is a review of Microsoft's next Windows mobile platform - 7 (http://www.gsmarena.com/windows_phone_7-review-521.php). In my opinion, MS hit a lot of good notes with this new OS, but they've lost a ton on functionality as well, mimicking the ever-popular iPhone and forcing me to other solutions. Due to the nature of my work, my phone has to do a lot of things, and copy&paste functionality is one of those things. So far, the list of pros and cons:
Key features:
* Premium mobile OS (high minimum hardware requirements)
* Clean, uncluttered interface with distinctive design language
* Easy and thumbable user interface
* Smooth operation with cool animations and transition effects
* A fresh start with no legacy support needed
* Backed up and developed by one of the largest software companies in the world
* Excellent MS Office mobile implementation
* Top-notch social integration
* Excellent cloud services integration (SkyDrive, Windows Live, Xbox Live)
Main disadvantages:
* No system-wide file manager
* No videocalling
* Limited third-party apps
* No Bluetooth file transfers
* No USB mass storage mode
* No memory card support
* No multitasking
* No copy paste
* Too dependent on Zune software for computer file management and syncing
* No music player equalisers
* No Flash or Silverlight support in the web browser
* No sign of free Bing maps Navigation so far
* No DivX/XviD video support

here are the options
1 . Apple Iphone 3gs 8gig

2 . HTC Desire

3 . Blackberry Bold 9700 white

Now i do realise the blackberry dosent use the android technology and that is fine by me , but im looking for a good new modern cellphone that has loads of features and easy to use and will be worth every penny, i am comming from a long line of samsungs etc and never owned an HTC or Blackberry.

Well, lets take a look at one thing before you consider buying any of those phones: if your phone has a problem, and you want to warranty it, chances are you'll have to send it back to England if it fails. I'm not too clued up on HTC's policy regarding its warranty in a country different to the one the phone was brought in, but I do know that Apple (or Core Group, in this case) will probably support you even if you bought the phone in China.
I had a recent run-in with Research In Motion a little while back concerning my boss' Bold 9700, and they were thoroughly uncooperative, referring me back to the mobile service provider that he got the phone from. The problem was that his Blackberry Internet service was randomly switched off, and Vodacom supposedly had no way of fixing it.
For ease of use, superb reliability, and a recognisable and famous brand name, look no further than the iPhone. If you need the Blackberry service, go for the Bold - for Blackberry users it's never been about the phones, but the services that RIM provides.
The Desire, though, is just about the best all-round Android there is. If you're open to suggestions as well, you can always have a look at the superb Nokia N8, its really something to behold.

Miz3r, let me put it this way. I've owned a lot of different types of phones and once I bought my iPhone 3GS, I can't picture owning any other phone.
Sure other phones can do what the iPhone does and some more, but the functionality of an iPhone is simply superb.

Yeah that is one of the reasons i am leaning towards the blackberries because of the free internet etc, also the GPS is free through the blackberry service aswell which is a bonus as you wouldnt have to pay for it. so im still bit stuck, but i think the blackberry bold 9700 white will probably be my next phone too get.
Otherwise i might look at the HTC Desire but then will have to pay a bit more for all the services that go with it i guess.

Good choices either way. I'd still like to recommend the Nokia N8 as an all-rounder here, even if the Symbian OS is getting a little behind.

Nokia N9 Delayed, Pushing Back the Debut of the MeeGo OS (http://www.brighthand.com/default.asp?newsID=17136&news=Nokia+N9+Intel+MeeGo+Maemo+Nokia+N900)
Nokia admitted today that it has been forced to delay the launch its first smartphone running the MeeGo OS. The Nokia N9 is expected to be the debut of Nokia new operating system, but it won't be on the market until next year.
Speaking during a conference call with investors today, Stephen Elop, Nokia's new CEO and President, said that the "first MeeGo device will be a 2011 event." Previously, company executives had said that a MeeGo-based smartphone will be available by the end of this year. Elop did not give a reason for the delay.
This isn't good news for Nokia, as it means this device -- which rumors say will be the Nokia N9 -- will miss the very important holiday shopping season.
Even more importantly, Nokia is hoping to use MeeGo to gain ground against with Google's Android OS (http://www.brighthand.com/default.asp?newsID=16568&news=Google+Android+OS+2.2+Tethering+Adobe+Flash+2 .1+Upgrade+HTC+Droid+Incredible+EVO+4G) and Apple's iOS in cutting-edge smartphones, and any delay gives its competition time to get farther ahead.
What the Rumors Say
http://www.brighthand.com/assets/14345.jpg (http://www.brighthand.com/gallery.asp?newsID=17136)
In late summer, images of the Nokia N9 began to leak out of its manufacturer. These show that this device is going to have a landscape-oriented keyboard and a slide-and-tilt display.
Aside from these sparse details, little is known about this upcoming model. Still, it's likely to be well supplied with features.
More About MeeGo
Earlier this year, Nokia and Intel announced that they are combining their Linux-based operating systems. Nokia's Maemo is currently available on the N900, while and Intel's Moblin was created for netbooks and tablets.
The resulting operating system, dubbed MeeGo (http://www.brighthand.com/search.asp?searchQuery=MeeGo), will run on a range of mobile computers, including phones and tablets.
Nokia has said it will be the operating system for its high-end smartphones, with Symbian powering its mid-range and entry-level models.

iOS 4.1 glitch lets you bypass lock screen to access Phone app, photo album (video) (http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/25/ios-4-1-glitch-lets-you-bypass-lock-screen-to-access-phone-app/)
http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/10/ios-call-glitch-rm-eng.jpg (http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/25/ios-4-1-glitch-lets-you-bypass-lock-screen-to-access-phone-app/)
Your iPhone's passcode entry can't block everything, it seems -- at least not with iOS 4.1. We're hearing various reports that simply inputting a random number in the emergency call field, pressing call, and then promptly hitting the hardware lock button will take you to the Phone app, thereby granting you access to the call history, voicemail, and address book. We've tried this with iPhone 3G, 3GS, and 4, all with the same result. We can't get out of the field without trying to place a call, and after that we're still stuck back at the passcode screen. Additionally, selecting "share contact" and then the camera icon will give you access to the photo album. Pay mind that your particularly paranoid pals could probably use this to see if you really did stop calling your ex and delete all his or her pictures. We won't judge, but they will. Video proof of concept after the break.
Update: Feel free to hold down the menu button to access voice control and play some locally-stored tunes while you're at it. And if you've got 4.2 beta like some of our staffers do, this "trick" should work just the same.

Skyfire To Bring Adobe Flash Video to the iPhone on Thursday (http://www.brighthand.com/default.asp?newsID=17174&news=Apple+iPhone+iOS+Adobe+Flash+Skyfire+web+brow ser)
Apple has given its approval to Skyfire, a web browser for the iPhone (http://www.brighthand.com/default.asp?newsID=16719&review=Apple+iPhone+4+iOS+4.0+ATT) that is capable of playing Flash video. This app, which will debut on Thursday, will allow users to watch streaming video from a wide variety of web sites.
Apple CEO Steve Jobs has made it clear that the iOS is not going to support Flash, and his company has instead given it full support to streaming video over HTML5. The Skyfire bridges this gap by converting Flash video into HTML5 video, which can then be played on the iPhone.
This unlocks content normally trapped behind those error messages with question marks and blue Legos.
However, there are a couple of limitations. Skyfire is blocked from accessing the videos on the popular video site Hulu. And this browser handles on Flash video, not Flash-based games and other apps.
http://www.brighthand.com/assets/14542.jpg (http://www.brighthand.com/gallery.asp?newsID=17174)
A Proxy-based Browser
Potential users of this web browser should be aware that it heavily depends on proxy servers. These take in the raw web pages, re-adapt them, and then serve lower bandwidth versions to the mobile device.
The advantage of this system is it requires less data to be sent to the smartphone, and pages often render faster. It also lets Skyfire render content not possible on the device, like Flash.
However, proxy-based browsers are also inherently less secure than standard web browsers. The Skyfire servers have access to everything that is done in a browser session.
Pricing and Availability
Skyfire 2.0 for the iPhone (http://www.brighthand.com/default.asp?newsID=16719&review=Apple+iPhone+4+iOS+4.0+ATT) is going to appear on the Apple App Store on Thursday morning. It will sell for $2.99.
There is already a version of this software for the Android OS. It is currently available for free in the Android Market

What You Can and Can't Do With Storage Cards in WP7 (http://windowsphonethoughts.com/news/show/101093/what-you-can-and-can-t-do-with-storage-cards-in-wp7.html)
"If your Windows Phone 7 device contains an SD card, you should think of it as a permanent component of your phone, not as removable storage. The Windows Phone 7 operating system treats the SD card as an integrated part of the phone. This is in contrast to other devices, where you can use an SD card to increase the memory available to the device at any time or to transfer files to other devices"
http://images.thoughtsmedia.com/resizer/thumbs/size/600/wpt/auto/1289258123.usr7.jpg
It's all a blob to Windows Phone 7, your storage that is. Add an SD card (if you have a slot) and you get more storage (just please use a card a bit bigger than the one shown above - can you believe they still sell those (http://www.dhgate.com/special-original-jvc-sd-card-8m-sd-8m-sd/p-ff808081296d9aca012982645f6b691f.html)?!?), but gone are the days of popping multiple cards in or out on a whim. So there you have it partner, straight from the Microsoft Knowledge Bases' Mouth.
Swapping Onboard Storage On The HD7 (http://windowsphonethoughts.com/news/show/100956/swapping-onboard-storage-on-the-hd7.html)
"One of the limitations of Windows Phone 7 is, that Microsoft's new mobile OS isn't supporting user removable flash memory like microSD cards, as supported by Windows Mobile, but Windows Phone 7 uses embedded memory like Apple's iPhone does...However, even if Windows Phone 7 isn't featuring a customer swappable flash memory, it seems that some handset manufactures are using micro SD cards anyway."
http://images.thoughtsmedia.com/resizer/thumbs/size/600/wpt/auto/1288315017.usr14226.jpg
Even though Microsoft has mandated non-swappable storage, you can still upgrade a WP7 device's storage capacity (http://windowsphonethoughts.com/news/show/100762/windows-phone-7-and-removable-storage.html) if it has a MicroSD slot - if you don't mind having to factory-reset your phone. the::unwired.net takes a stab at the process, and though it's not as trouble-free as it could be, Arne shows that it can be done.

Well I take it that the one that costs R1500 is the Curve 8520.. Even at that price that blackberry is a good deal.
Personally I could care less about blackberries :) I have a Nokia E63 and i does everything the Curve does... and it is cheaper.

Microsoft: we figured people would hack Windows Phone 7, would suggest that they don't (http://www.engadget.com/2010/11/26/microsoft-we-figured-people-would-hack-windows-phone-7-would-s/)
http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/11/chevronwp7.jpg (http://www.engadget.com/2010/11/26/microsoft-we-figured-people-would-hack-windows-phone-7-would-s/)
Hot on the heels of the release (http://www.engadget.com/2010/11/25/windows-phone-7-gets-user-friendly-hack-for-bypassing-the-market/) of a utility for bypassing the Windows Marketplace and sideloading your own apps, Microsoft has released a brief statement on the state of the Windows Phone 7 (http://www.engadget.com/tag/WindowsPhone7/) hacking community... and we wouldn't exactly say they're too worked up about it:
"We anticipated that people would attempt to unlock the phones and explore the underlying operating system. We encourage people to use their Windows Phone as supplied by the manufacturer to ensure the best possible user experience. Attempting to unlock a device could void the warranty, disable phone functionality, interrupt access to Windows Phone 7 services or render the phone permanently unusable."
So yeah, we'd say this is more or less a boilerplate quote: "we figured you'd hack this thing, we'd prefer it if you didn't, and here's a laundry list of things that could (but probably won't) happen if you fail to heed our meek warning." Over the long term, we wouldn't be surprised if Redmond ended up playing an Apple-style cat-and-mouse game with these folks, breaking hacks with firmware updates only to have them re-hacked within a few days' time. Considering the lack of spitfire in the statement here, we don't see them coming down too hard unless legitimate, card-carrying, fee-paying developers throw a fit -- and granted, ChevronWP7 stands to make loading pirated apps a breeze, so that could very well happen.

VLC App For iOS May Be Pulled Due To Licensing Disputes (http://vr-zone.com/articles/vlc-app-for-ios-may-be-pulled-due-to-licensing-disputes/10203.html)
http://resources.vr-zone.com/newvr/image.php?m=540&s=http://resources.vr-zone.com//uploads/10203/iphone_ban.jpg
When the iOS part of the popular VLC media player client found its way to the app store, countless iOS users were elated, and for good reason. The popular free software was one of the few media players which had extremely broad support for a wide range of media codecs and containers, and having it installed in iOS allowed the device to serve as portable media player for enjoying videos on the move.
However, it seems that all of this is about to come to an abrupt, screeching halt, courtesy of a developer who is among the many who have contributed code to the popular media player application. Apparently, it appears that Apple's licensing terms regarding its iTunes App Store is in direct violation of one of the terms in the GPL v2, the license which VLC is released under. This could result in the VLC app being pulled from the iTunes App Store, if Apple does not attempt to remedy the alleged violation of the GPL v2 by its distribution of the app in its online app store.
To understand why Apple and VideoLan, the owners of VLC, are locked in this dispute, it is necessary to understand how each party's software licensing works. Apple's iTunes App Store gives the company the right to layer proprietary and non-free components such as DRM on any application submitted to the App Store. This is most easily seen by the fact that the VLC player for iOS is restricted for use on only a maximum of five iOS devices.
In contrast, VLC is distributed under the free GPLv2 license. This license, in a nutshell, explicitly specifies, among many other terms, that users have the right to install the software on any number of devices they desire. But more importantly, any code added to the device must subsequently have its source released to the public under the GPL. By adding its own proprietary DRM layer to the VLC app and not releasing it under the GPL, Apple is in direct violation of the GPLv2 license.
The contributor who filed the complaint against Apple, Remi Denis-Courmont, confirmed that a formal notice had already been sent to the Cupertino company. He also expressed some regret that Apple is unlikely to relax its licensing terms, and the most possible outcome is that the company will pull the app from the App Store, thus depriving iOS users of the VLC app.
However, he also made it clear that while Applidium, the third-party which ported VLC's code for iOS was mostly at fault for taking a risk with a legal grey area, the blame lay largely with Apple and not the third-party developer.
“They (Applidium) bear full responsibility for any consequences. Personally, I don't blame them because I know very well how a geek feels when writing cool code for a cool new gadget,” he wrote in the VLC developers' mailing list.
This current state of affairs largely mimics a similar case with GNU Go, a chess game which was also released under the free GPL licence. Instead of accommodating the GPL licence, Apple simply opted to drop the app from its iTunes App Store, and it is expected that a similar fate awaits the VLC app if Apple's past action was a sign of how it dealt with licensing disputes. This is in direct contrast to how Google's Android Marketplace works, where it specifically states that the app's licence will automatically take precedence over that of the Marketplace's in the event of a licensing dispute.
And until VideoLan, Applidium and Apple can sort out this licensing dispute between the App Store and the GPL, it seems that there is only one possible outcome for the VLC media player app. So, if you own an iOS-powered device, we'd strongly suggest that you get your copy of the app now before it suddenly vanishes into thin air.

They hate the GPL license more than they hate losing money on their app store, and it goes to show that they would rather sleep in a bed filled with your money than give you the pleasure of watching porn on the iPhone no matter what bitrate, size or file extension the video has.

That is what lets Apple developers sleep at night.
The worst part is that you can't save the install file for later, or to share with friends.
