Too many users not enough cash

YouTube is about to go down the gurgler according to Benjamin Wayne the CEO of Fliqz.

Writing in his purple prose stacked blog, Wayne said that YouTube, was an "incandescent tower of video Babel; monument to the sloughed-off detritus of our exponentially-exploding digital culture". Wayne described it as a "Technicolor cataract of skateboarding dogs, lip-synching college students, political punditry, and porn".

However he claims that it has reached the zenith of its meteoric rise; and Icarus-like, wings melting; is spiraling back to earth. Murdering the metaphor he added that YouTube was soaring towards the future like a pigeon towards a plate glass window. We guess he didn't realise that pigeons can't soar upwards towards a plate glass window unless it was being towed behind a 747.

Wayne pointed out that YouTube is on track to lose roughly $470 million in 2009 something its overlord Google is not going to be happy about. He said that the economics are hard to overcome and there is no way that YouTube will make enough cash to be sustainable in the long term. The outfit would have to make $9.48 for every video impression shown something which they cannot do.

Wayne added that YouTube's traffic will grow and cost a fortune to run. He thinks that eventually the outfit will have to come up with a subscription.

That man is crazy to think that Youtube will go down. Look at Wikipedia. It's also usergenerated and it's not going to crash soon. But you have to mention that wikipedia does get donations and sponserships from external companies but Youtube can do the same if they aren't doing it already ( the sponsership part, I'm not sure about this because I haven't been to Youtube in a long time ). Youtube probally also has some advertisments on it's website that also bring in some income. The recent lose of money can also be because of the economic crisis.

Wait, what. You think it's because it's user generated that it can magically withstand the inexorable forces of economy? I'm quite sure that, if nothing else, YouTube's bandwidth usage and costs must dwarf Wikipedia's. Also, it's inhabited almost exclusively by stupid people.

Dwarf is an understatement. Wikipedia prunes it's pages to avoid redundancy and dupes. YouTube is pretty much built on the fact that you can find the same video uploaded twenty five times, just with different watermarks 'n ****.

On topic, LOL!

No, but Youtube is not that likely to crash and burn because it's user generated.

This guy's an attention *****, just like the Russian economist who said the United States would split up, he's just hoping his company becomes more popular due to this.

Youtube has been #3 on the Alexa web rankings for forever, and the only difference between now and last year, is Youtube has way more partners and ads, so if anything, they're still going up, rather than descending already.

Why dont they add a 5-10 sec commercial at the start of each video, that will bring in loads of cash.

With a website that popular, advertising is the way to go. Think about how many people would be seeing each ad!

How f*cking stupid are you?

Since you're too goddamned thick to figure this one out, let me explain it in baby talk for you.

YOUTUBE IS A WEBSITE.

WEBSITES DON'T MAGICALLY EXIST IN SOME ENCHANTED DIMENSION.

THE FILES FOR SITES ARE HOSTED ON SERVERS, AND THIS COSTS MONEY.

REGARDLESS OF WHO IS PUTTING FILES ON THE SITE, THE HOSTING IS STILL PAID FOR BY THE SITE OWNERS.

I HOPE THIS CLEARS UP THIS OBVIOUSLY VERY COMPLEX AND MYSTERIOUS SITUATION FOR YOU.

Neither would I, waiting for the video itself is an already large irritation.

Damn.

I'm studying networking, and the costs of running a reliable server 24/7 are enormous. The estimated cost for running Google's servers is R100,000 per day.

What the hell is that supposed to mean? Anyway, on topic: if youtube put adverts on every single video, wouldn't it cost them a lot of money to edit those videos

[OFF TOPIC] ah, I thoroughly enjoyed Onona's post here... It's funny how both Onona and Azimuth get on the same wavelength when correcting or retorting to idiotic posts by our "fine" member here. I guess it's because you're sisters. By the way, it's not an insult towards you ladies, it's an observation. You're the only people here that will be so highly offended by stupidity and respond with such passion, it is indeed entertaining. Another reason why I love these forums ;)

[BACK ON TOPIC] There must be gigs and gigs of videos on their servers, think about all the maintenance of such a high volume media website such as YouTube. I wonder if it will ever actually happen, will YouTube wither and die?

no actually, all they have to do is add a script to load a random ad before the vid start buffering

But turn away loads of people. I would not use them if they did that.

If it crashes, like the article thinks it might, there will be no users at all. However if it loses die hard DRM and advert haters, it's still got yuppie teens watching spears pop her private parts out in public.

I think it should collaborate with UEFA to allow football clips as it's currently banned by UEFA. This would give a viable income and allow millions of footy fans access to good content. Some sites that show football clips don't allow you to watch unless you live in that country.

Well good riddance, not only will the make an ass-hell load of money, they're not losing anything by having people leave their website.

Another thing Youtube should encourage is for users to upload flv's to other free hosting websites, and youtube could just show them. That would save a hell-load of money on hosting.

Popularity of the site has nothing to do with it this just shows that youtube has more users and bandwidth costs than they can afford esspecially since they have no sort of donations system and dont really have any real sponsors. what they should do is employ people to search their site for video duplicates and delete the duplicates in order to decrease their band width and apply for sponsors.

What the hell is that supposed to mean? Anyway, on topic: if youtube put adverts on every single video, wouldn't it cost them a lot of money to edit those videos

No it wouldnt cost much since they dont need to edit the video at all. Your probably thinking the ad and the video are one file but their not, their two seperate files. What they do is just set a script to play a random ad before the video starts buffering then once the ad is done the main video simply starts buffering.

Although I'm not sure how to make that make money.

Well, its been about 3 weeks and it still hasn't gone down the drain. We can safely assume that since Google owns it, it wont go down so easily.
