I know I am not the only one looking forward to this movie, so I thought I would create this thread now and post my thoughts on the movie after tomorrow night :) Pre-screening tickets FTUW :)
I plan to watch it without any pre-conceptions about what it 'should' be like, needless to say, I think that Star Trek will be taking a dramatic turn after this movie. Whether that is a good or a bad thing, only time will tell.

Sigh. The cop bugs me. Earth is supposed to be a paradise. In the series someone mentioned they were pick pocketed on Earth. Everyone just looked at him funny.

I'm a Star Wars fanboi... But I'm so desperate for a quality sci-fi flick that i cant miss this. And I'm loving Star-Trek season 1 on Go (123) at the moment.

TOS The Original Series
Just got back from the pre-screening. Personal point of view but I loved it, plan to see it again when it is released formally. Excellent mix of action and humour (OMFG Simon Pegg as Scotty, have to see it to believe it!!!!!!). Brilliant choice of actors for the different roles (Eric Bana was a bit flat as the bad guy but perhaps it is flat compared to some of the others). A lot more action packed than the previous Trek movies and 100 times better than Nemesis (Patrick Stewart, I will love him forever, but this movie was better)
My best suggestion is to go see it for yourself and judge for yourself. The crowd of 1200 people gave it a hearty applause and everyone I spoke to loved it. I loved it. But I went in there with no expections and I was not disappointed. It is not a re-hash, it is not a resurrection of an old story, it is not scraping the bottom of the barrel for movie ideas, it is a new era in Star Trek, one that perhaps, just perhaps, Gene Roddenbury would have liked.
HUGE SPOILER for those too curious for words:
From this day forth in Treknology there will be an alternative timeline. They have destroyed Vulcan in the movie, leaving the Vulcans as the new El-Aurians in effect with a measly 10 000 our of 6 billion Vulcans alive. Things will be slightly different now in future movies or even series' but it looks like, apart from the destruction of Vulcan, the effects will be minor.

The Original Series. You said you were watching season 1 of the series, but there are 5 different Star Trek series.
1. The Original Series
2. The Next Generation
3. Deep Space Nine
4. Voyager
5. Enterprise

In his defence, Zachary Quinto was a very good Spock in my opinion. He portrayed a conflicted half-Vulcan very well, especially with his sparks of intense emotion.

I can't wait for this movie, I am not a hardcore trekkie but this does look incredible. I have seen two different trailers and it looks like they might just have got the action vs character development right.
I just hope it is not one of those times where the trailer shows all the cool stuff and nothing is left.

That trailer deserved an Oscar for breaking the awesome barrier. And I didn't realize what a great cast it has. Friggen Simon Pegg! Harold! The guy from that ****ty Lindslay Lohan movie!
So when's the release date here in ZA?

Personal opinion here but no they don't show all the cool things and the rest is crap - I loved the movie and plan to buy the DVD when it comes out :D
So when's the release date here in ZA?
I do believe it is the same as the global release date, in which case, this Friday the 8th May

Can't wait to see the movie but I am disappointed that it won't be canon :( as I would have loved to have seen Kirk hack the Kobayashi Maru simulator so he would be able to win it as mentioned in either ST:II WOK or ST:III TSFS,etc... :(

Pro tip, not just for you, but for everyone who sees this movie - Do NOT compare it to the other Star Trek movies, this is not the slow paced sci fi romp like ST:Nemesis. I love Patrick Stewart to bits but this movie is way better. It is fast paced, full of action and unlike any other Star Trek movie, series or episode I have ever seen.
If you go in there expecting it to be like all the other movies and series' you are going to set yourself up for disappointment. Just trust me.
Go with an open mind. A familiarity of the characters is helpful but by no means essential. I loved it and wish that everyone else would love it like me but I know that some will go see it and compare it to what they remember from when they were kids. There will always be those who cannot accept change.
I will use the Star Wars series as an example. The fans of the first three movies hated the second set of three. This movie is designed, I hope, to bring old Trekkies back into the fold (throwing a different twist on what they know and love) and draw in new fans to a series that has been stereotyped as geeky and only for nerds.
Such stereotyping is frakking idiotic and is as relevant as saying all video gamers are fat, twenty somethings who have glasses, braces, no social skills and live in their parents basement where they argue about why PC is so much better than consoles.

The movie has been getting excellent reviews so far. Metacritic (http://www.metacritic.com/film/titles/startrek2009?q=star%20trek) has it at 90, and Rotten Tomatoes (http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/star_trek_11/) at 94. Some are calling it the greatest prequel ever made!
Guess you were spot on Kensei ;) Friday night can't come quick enough!

Yes it was! OMG and a half, it was out of this world. I especially liked Chris Pine, not someone that can carry a movie but he was excellent.
I wonder, should we classify this movie as a prequel, even though it is actually set in an alternate reality?

First Star Trek movie I've watched (fully), and it was amazing. Even if you're not a Trekkie, you'd probably enjoy this movie. There was never a moment where I was bored or wanted something different to happen, and the special effects were amazing. Overall, best movie I've seen in a while.

I am glad to read that so many people are enjoying the movie as much as I did.
My final challenge is to get my sister and her boyfriend (who loved the Wolverine movie) to go see this movie. I fear that the words 'Star' and 'Trek' in the same sentence is scaring them off :(

The only bad thing about the movie was raised on the way back from the theater by everyone's favorite ever-vigilant Nandrew:
"Wait. Does this mean that we're going to see all new perversions in slashfic? Spock-Prime meets Spock-Sylar, Vulcan mouth-meld commence!"

Saw it yesterday and it was pretty good. I would love to see a 'new' series made set in that era with the same actors, imagine that? They would not be able to achieve the same sort of visual quality in tv series, but it could still be pretty cool.

What I really enjoyed about this movie is that (even though I didn't really like TOS) it brought back the fun of TOS. The characters didn't take themselves seriously (most of them)
It is like, wow, I am in space, this is freakin awesome, lets go have some fun.

NO we shouldn't classify this movie as a prequel! After all Vulcan gets destroyed and the Enterprise looks different so it can be called another Star Trek movie!

I just watched it now, and it was really epic. They managed to fit a crap load of stuf into roundabout 2 hours. I think they did the franchise well. I think the actors of this movie are pretty much made for the next couple of years. It wouldn't surprise if the next installment is either in the pipeline or in pre-production because the producers would be fools not to follow-up with another one.

This movie actually made Star Trek look good against my beloved Star Wars! (Lets not get into an argument here)
A quality Sci-Fi is what I wanted, and its what I got, R15 well spent (ja, its that cheap here!)
I agree with everyone else. I have never seen anything relating to Star Trek so I am far from what you would call a fan but i thought this movie was awesome on many levels.

I... can't really decide what I thought. It didn't feel like Trek to me, more like some other movie with a Trek skin on it. Oh, it wasn't bad. On the contrary, it was really well done: well-acted, a good cheesy pulp sci-fi plot with a few good laughs in it, great space battles with lots of 'splosions, and some of the most incredible CG I've ever seen.
Only one thing. One tiny, tiny thing: I will offer seven virgin sacrifices to the seventh son of a seventh son, if the director could keep the bloody camera still for more than three seconds so that I can ACTUALLY SEE WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON. What's the point of having the Epic-est Space Battle Evar on-screen, with the most realistically-rendered explody starships ever produced by modeller, texturer, lighter, shader programmer and director if the camera is jiggling and swooshing all over the place before you have a chance to take anything in? It's exactly the same problem I had with Transformers. Directors sacrifice the ability to show you what's going on for Tremendous High Energy Sensory Overload +99.
But yeah, fun times. Definitely the most entertaining Trek media item produced in a long while, even if I can't decide if I really like it yet. :S

People never keep the camera still in action movies. Ever. It is why I gave up on the majority of Western action movies, to compensate for the constant switching between the stuntman and the actor, you get so many camera changes :(
ill have to wait 3 years for it to get to namibia :(

At least you can still see what's going on for the most part, which is more than I can say for the OMGPHASERS epilepsy-fest that formed the majority of the space battles.
But yeah. After further consideration, I really liked this movie. I guess I just needed to get over the shock of all the massive canon-shiftings (Bad Trekkie! Bad! :P), but overall it was a lot of fun. Which is what Star Trek is about, right? :D
